Gerry Granahan - No Chemise, Please

No chemise, please, not for me, please
Well you can take back the sack, leave it hangin' on the rack
And bring a sweater back!!

This dude obviously hated the "sack dress". This is one of the first 45's i collected when i started buying non punk, metal, hardcore and rock records and started going back in time to older rock and roll, doc top, R&B, soul and the like. I still dig it. Here is the wiki lowdown below....

Gerry Granahan (born April 20, 1932, Pittston, Pennsylvania) is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known for his work in the 1950s and 1960s.

Gerry (Gerald Granahan) has confirmed his actual birthdate is April 20, 1932 on both his Facebook page and his official website, and has commented that he does not know where the June 17, 1939 birthdate has come from. The confusion stems from the fact that Dave Alldred, drummer for Dicky Doo and the Don'ts, later assumed the name Dicky Doo as his legal name. As it turns out, June 17, 1939 is the birthday of Dave Alldred, aka Dicky Doo, rather than Gerry Granahan.

Granahan worked at WPTS in Pittston as a radio announcer and disc jockey in his youth. His Elvis Presley-like voice got him a job recording demos of songs submitted to Presley.[1] Granahan was offered a contract with Atlantic Records in 1957 as a rockabilly artist under the name Jerry Grant, but his release sank without a trace, and another release shortly after on Mark Records was also a flop.

In 1958 Granahan teamed with publisher Tommy Volando on Sunbeam Records, and recorded the single "No Chemise Please". The song became a nationwide hit in the U.S., peaking at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2] None of his next four singles for Sunbeam were sales successes; however, during this time Granahan also co-wrote the song "Click Clack" with Dave Alldred of The Rhythm Orchids. A demo of the tune reached Dick Clark, as well as Tony Mammarella, who had just founded Swan Records. Because of contractual obligations, Granahan released the song under the alias Dickie Doo & the Don'ts on Swan, and Clark guaranteed it airplay on American Bandstand.[1] The single's success resulted in Granahan recruiting a backing band consisting of Harvey Davis (bass), Al Ways (sax), Ray Gangi (guitar), and Dave Alldred (drums) to tour and record as Dicky Doo & the Don'ts, who went on to chart several more singles. Granahan also managed a regional hit in the U.S. Northeast with the single "Let the Rumors Fly", released on Gone Records.

Granahan also produced extensively. He recorded the doo wop group The Fireflies and the girl group The Angels, and later in the 1960s, Patty Duke and Jay & the Americans. Granahan produced The Wild Ones' version of the song "Wild Thing", which was dwarfed by the success of the version by The Troggs.[1]

Later in his career, Granahan worked in the industry, serving as vice president of Dot Records and Paramount Records. He still performs today as Dicky Doo and the Don'ts Featuring Gerry Granahan.

The Spinners - Heebie Jeebie's

I think this is The Spinners first record from 1961? And it's a far cry from the smoother soul sounds they would later find huge success with in the 70's and 80's, this is a straight rocker with nice stinging guitar work. Tight.

Just Water - King Kong / Play It Loud

A recent pick up. Punky rock out of NYC. For dudes that wanted to "Play It Loud" it's pretty wimpy. Heh... "King Kong" is cool little tune that has a bit of a "stranded in the jungle" vibe.

Producer Charly Pip was a member of The Colors & Skulls, another great NJ punk rock and roll band.... he and Lenny are now in a band called DEVILHAUS.

Ed Pauling And The Exciters - Soul House

Ed Pauling And The Exciters from 1965 w/ a great swinging blues/soul instrumental with some killer guitar work on the great Savoy Records label. The horns keep it pumping and we get a little bass solo action w/ some answering guitar. Neat. The tune ends rather abruptly and i'd have liked it to jam on for a bit more but whats there is pretty excellent. jam on it.

Hey Anonymous, you still out there....???

Back in June I posted a mix. The Summer 2012 100 Degree Heat Mix - The Devils Music Mix Vol. 23. I asked folks to guess the tracks. A few were guessed right away and then the mix sat there dormant for months and then I got an Anonymous player who started guessing everything in site! Well, he got stuck on a few and this is one of the tracks. So for all his hard work and effort I am throwing him a bone and giving him one of the unguessed tracks. So here it is.... Track 9 from The Summer 2012 Summer 100 Degree Heat Mix, Ussery from 1973 with some great Hendrix/Trower inspired guitar rock.

Ussery - Listen To The Melody

For those that might want to try the remaining tracks or just check the mix out, you can do so HERE:

There is also an older mix I did back in May 2011 called Mind Games where i asked people to call out the tracks.... I got a few tracks guessed and then nothing. Go have a stab at it PLEASE & THANK YOU.

Cheers!

Bintangs - Ridin on the L & N - Down South Blues

Dutch Rock and Roll from 1969. Very Stones influeneced. The Flaming Groovies must have listened to these guys as well or is this coincidence they sound so similar? Maybe they were both just trying to be the Stones right around the same time.....??? The cover of this 7" has seen better days but that don't make these songs any less cool.... Rock 'N Roll!

Babs Gonzales - Babs Five Rocks And A Roll - Voila - No Fools No Fun

Strange one today... French rock and roll back with some Calypso by Babs Gonzales. Some more New Jersey greatness...

Babs Gonzales (October 27, 1919 – January 23, 1980), born Lee Brown, was an American jazz vocalist of the bebop era most notable for penning the song "Oop-Pop-A-Da", which was originally recorded and performed by his own band (Three Bips and a Bop) and was later made famous by Dizzy Gillespie . Babs was also once the chauffeur for Errol Flynn. In 1967, Babs published an autobiography entitled: "I Paid My Dues: Good Times... No Bread - A Story of Jazz" (Lancer Books).
Gonzales was born in Newark, NJ. He was known to be an exponent of vocalese, an example of this would be his version of the Charlie Parker bop standard "Ornithology". From 1950 to 1953, Gonzales was road manager and vocalist for the James Moody band and later gigged and recorded with musicians such as Jimmy Smith, Bennie Green, Lenny Hambro and Johnny Griffin. Sonny Rollins also made his recording debut with Gonzales. He was also a Beat poet.
