ABC-PARAMOUNT 10039— Rocker instrumental with a Latinish beat spots a twangy guitar lead. Wordless chorus is spotlighted.

The Squares - Davey's Drag

Sax rocker with a guitar break from the squares on the Bristol records label. This is sort of a doo-wop rocker and a bit of a garage/surf rocker. Maybe caught in between? The year i found on the web is 1959. I don't know.... I got nothing. I've been sick and tired and i'm bored so i pulled this out while cataloging some records and decided to download. Maybe someone has some info? If not enjoy anyway.

Marty Gino - Cry Baby, Sigh Ba-A-By

Today's flea market find. I knew nothing about this before i bought it and still don't, but it was cheap and looked interesting. It's a mild type teen rocker, maybe a bit like a more poppy rockabilly tune....?

The Shieks - Baghdad Rock (Part 1 & 2)

2 great instrumentals from 1959 by The Shieks on the Trine label, which is fairly "rare" i suppose...? This became a bit of a "hit" and MGM Records picked it up and released it later.

Part 2 is much cooler imho...

Bill Haley - Real Rock Drive & Ray Smith - That's All Right - Rockin' Little Angel

I got these 45's with the same records as the ones from yesterday's post. If you read that then you get it. Sure these things are beat to hell but it's the music, not perfect labels i am after. I actually got shit in my comments about a label that was ugly once... if these labels turn you off then go take your elitist musical ass some place else.

The Ray Smith 45 a payed i buck for and even with its ugly labels worth every penny. Real good Elvis influenced rockabilly stuff from 1959 or 1960?

the Bill Haley i payed a few dollars more for this but it is from 1952 and pretty rare i guess. It is pretty hard to find early Bill Haley stuff on Essex. I have a bunch of his Decca 45's but only a few on Essex so i bought it. Man, was this cat ahead of the game... 1952!

Anyway, i'm throwing these up to further a few of my points from yesterday.... Enjoy the music and never mind the beat up labels.

As for Mr. Haley, I'm sure most are familiar w/ him, no?

And as for Mr. Ray Smith, well, he killed himself in 1979....

Have a nice day!

The Spacemen - The Clouds

"The Clouds" is a 1959 instrumental by The Spacemen, an instrumental studio group. The single released on the Alton label, was the only chart hit by The Spacemen. "The Clouds hit number one on the R&B chart for three non consecutive weeks, and also peaked at number forty-one on the Hot 100.

The Spacemen Consisted of one Samuel "Sammy" Benskin (September 27, 1922 – August 26, 1992) who an African American pianist and bandleader.
He was born in The Bronx, New York City, and made his professional debut around 1940 as piano accompanist to singer and guitarist Bardu Ali. He worked throughout the 1940s with jazz musicians including Stuff Smith, Benny Morton and Don Redman. By the early 1950s he had begun leading his own piano trio, as well as appearing as a soloist and as accompanist to singers including Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler. In 1954 he also joined a group, The Three Flames. Later in the 1950s he worked as accompanist to Dinah Washington.
In 1959, with the band credited as The Spacemen, he recorded an instrumental, "The Clouds", written and produced by Julius Dixson and issued on Dixson's Alton record label. Other session musicians playing on the record were Panama Francis, Haywood Henry, and Babe Clark. The song originally had vocals, which Dixson removed, releasing the instrumental version. This rose to # 1 on the Billboard R&B chart, and # 41 on the pop chart. "The Clouds" was the first number one on any chart released by an African-American owned independent record label, predating Motown's first # 1 by a year.

Sammy died in Teaneck, New Jersey, aged 69.
