Unknown Instrumental Metal Band - Demo Tape

Still digging through tapes. This one sounds familiar like this is an unfinished tape that SHOULD have vocals but was passed around pre-vox added? The sound is very NJ in the 90's. Like i'm sure who ever this is played with Ripping Corpse, Times Up, Human Remains, maybe Dead Guy or Dirge too!? and all that other metal crossover stuff that was going on at The Fastlane in Asbury Park at the time.... Anyone know who this is?!?!?!???? ==== EDIT: It's been determined that this in FACT the band Dirge from N.J. without vocals! Unknown Instrumental Metal Band - Demo Tape

Unknown Band #2 - demo tape

Still going through old tapes and found another with no labels & no j-card and no information. Sorta sounds like a grungy metal band with robert smith of the cure; gothy type vox..... i have no idea. === Most likely from the tri-state area.... Unknown Band #2

Trix - Official Business

I bought this 45 being told it was from the 70's but I don't think that is correct? This has a early 80's party metal vibe to me but I could me mistaken? Anyone have any info on the group or 45?
I really dig the really fuzzy guitars and solos...

Uforia - Out Of Control

Very little info on the net this one, but what I found was it is from 1980 and they were from Cleveland. If that is true it's very metal for 1980 and pre-dates a lot of NWOBHM and west coast thrash by years. Pretty cool, dirty & heavy as balls "biker rock". The slightly inept playing makes this a perfect fit for the stupid metal shit I love.

Welcome Idiot - Hash For A Thrasher

I've been playing w/ my 80's & 90's 7 inches of late. Here is some pretty good grungy, punky rock & roll with a tinge of metal from Welcome Idiot on Italian label Electric Eye Records from 1991. How fitting that i am drinking red wine as i type this... Sorry if divshare sucks so much but hey, its free and i hardly know what i am doing here.... Dig some Italian rockers and go get drunk on red wine....

Smoke Rise - I Need A Woman To Love

Big Dumb Thud Rocks w/ a Neanderthal Pace... I Love this shit.... Hard Rock for the sake of Rocking Hard. This kind of stuff is the beginning of Heavy Metal. Knuckle Dragging heavy guitar rock singing about needing a "woman with some meat between her thighs". Not rocket science, but it gets the point across.. File somewhere between Spooky Tooth & Nazereth.

Here is the wiki info:

Smoke Rise was an American progressive rock band in 1969-1972. In 1970, they created the first American Rock Opera, The Survival of St. Joan, based on a play and a libretto by James Lineberger and produced by Oscar-winner Stephen Schwartz and Dave Blume. Smoke Rise was known as a very melodic group with smooth 3 and 4 part harmonies, guitar solos and fills, and a tight rhythm section that rocked with the best groups of the 60's and 70's.
Notable productions

The Buffalo Production of The Survival of St. Joan set box office records[citation needed] in the fall of 1970 at the Studio Arena Theater in Buffalo, NY. The New York Off-Broadway production was staged at the Anderson Theater in the East Village, with Gretchen Corbett (later of The Rockford Files fame) playing the title role. Another Oscar winner, F. Murray Abraham, was also a member of the cast.
The artwork by Doug Jamieson for the cover of the double album (Paramount PAS 9000) was displayed in the New York Museum of Modern Art[citation needed].
Members

Its members were brothers Hank Ruffin (keyboards), Gary Ruffin (guitar), and Stan Ruffin (drums), and Randy Bugg (bass guitar).
In 1972 they replaced Randy Bugg on bass guitar with Bill Turpin and added Bob Sellmansberger (former band member now returned from military service) on guitar and put out a rock single, co-written and produced by Joey Levine, "I Need a Woman" (ATCO Records 45-6851). Its B-side was a bluesy "Late Last Friday Night", written by Gary.

Bob City - Swap Buggy Racin' - Dead Man

Some heavy late 90's grungy punk metal. Sounds like a cross between Tad and Earthride. The vocals sound like Sherman from earthride a lot. I would imagine that after a 12 pack and a few shots of Yager back in 1998 that old Bob here would have been a hell of a fun ride to have seen live.... Once again thanks to my good record pal Gene Mullett for turning me on to another forgotten Ohio nugget. Kudos brother!

Sterling Cooke - Don't Need You Anymore - Tomorrow Never Knows

Some early 80's Hendrix inspirired guitar shred by Sterling Cooke.

Sterling Cooke Isn't Jimi Hendrix, He's His Own Man

November 30, 1984|by CHERYL WENNER, The Morning Call.

With his shoulder-length, black, frizzy curls, tall, lanky build and casual all-black attire, Sterling Cooke looks out of place sitting in the cocktail lounge of the Allentown Hilton.

Though he may not dress for the role, Cooke, a textile chemist by day and heavy metal guitarist by night, is as ambitious and business-minded as the rest of the lounge's three-piece suit clientele.

For now, the 28-year-old Tamaqua native's business priority is that of booking and promoting his band, The Sterling Cooke Force, whose debut album of heavy-metal rock, "Full Force," dented the charts in England and around the world - even though the group rarely plays in the Lehigh Valley.

"I'd love to get the management responsibilities totally off my hands and just concentrate on writing and playing," he says, "but we just haven't been able to find the right people to take over the business end of things."

The Force, which includes Cooke, guitar and vocals; Michael Dutz, bass, and Albie Coccio, drums, was formed a year and a half ago.

Cooke's previous pop music experience included touring the South in a Top 40 cover band. Successful enough to draw enthusiastic audiences, Cooke remembers wanting the same energetic response for his own band and music.

After forming the Force, Cooke took a full-time chemist's position at a textile company to support himself and his wife Mary, who is due to deliver a bouncing, baby Cooke.

"My family has always been supportive," says Cooke. "When I was in high school, they encouraged me to pursue music, but I wanted to play sports. Later, when I came around to their way of thinking, they must have immediately regretted it because my band started rehearsing in their garage. I'm sure they silently took a lot of flack from the neighbors, but they never complained.

"Now my parents see the album in record stores and they say, 'Hey, that's my kid,' and my dad's office wall is papered with newspaper clippings. Still, they warn us to be careful . . . and they're right.

"This is a ridiculously risky business. People who have the right look and happen to be at the right place at the right time will always make it before the guy with real talent and no connections. It's a crazy field to get into . . . but its what I want to do."

A self-taught musician who started out as a bassist, Cooke thought a three-piece band would be the ideal vehicle for his primarily rhythm-oriented songs. When Cooke decided to switch to guitar, Dutz, a 31-year-old record store manager and music instructor from Hazleton, took over on bass. Drummer Coccio, at age 20, is the junior member of the Force.

The band's first record was a single on Cooke's own E.S.P Records, "Don't Need You Anymore." Cooke dedicated the single to his guitar hero, Jimi Hendrix, in a well-intentioned move that has pigeon-holed the band ever since.

"We're taking a lot of heat from critics for the Hendrix thing. We just got a copy of a review from Kerrang (a British heavy metal magazine). The guy really liked the album, liked the songs, said we played well, but at the end he wrote, 'If only they didn't try so hard to sound like Jimi Hendrix.'

"Honest, we don't purposely try to mimic Hendrix. I sing the way I sing and I play the way I play. Of course, it's a compliment to be compared to Hendrix. Let's face it, the guy changed the face of music.

"We still play a few Hendrix covers," admits Cooke, "because if we don't play them, people start yelling for them anyway, but we're not a tribute band."

Apparently, the group's sound impressed someone, namely Daryl Johnston, president of England's Ebony Records, a small independent label, who signed the band to a five-album deal and offered to produce the records.

"We've got a product that Daryl has faith in and he is extremely good to work with in the studio," says Cooke. "Some producers make you sound the way they want you to sound, but he works with the sound you give him. There's no whip cracking."

"Full Force" was released in Britain, Japan and Europe last July. It is distributed in the United States as an import by Important Records.

The group has taped a video featuring "Hit & Run," the British single that peaked at No. 10 in Melody Maker and No. 20 in New Musical Express's heavy metal listing.

"We made the Top 20 in Japan and have gotten good reviews everywhere except in Britain," he says, "Metal is on a downward turn over there. Also, it seems to them that the record companies favor American bands, so they've got a prejudice against American acts. It's 'Buy American' in reverse."

One place where heavy metal never seems to falter is in the Lehigh Valley. Ironically, the Forcehas had trouble finding bookings here. The group has played in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, New York and New Jersey. On Dec. 14 and 15, the Force will open for guitarist Robin Trower in Brooklyn, and later that month, for Motorhead in Baltimore.

Impaler - Rise Of The Mutants

Clocking in at under 10 minuets this is one of my fave EP's... I think i like the Demon Flight EP just above this one. And although this screams Heavy Metal and does have insane ripping guitar playing all over it, it still has a sleezy punk rock vibe underneath it all. It sort of reminds me of New Jersey's mega sleeze rockers Genocide a bit, who i totally dig. These days about all i can take of most metal is about 10 minuets so this fits the bill prefectly.

Punishment Of Luxury - Puppet Life - The Demon

Some pretty tight punky progy metal-ish tunes from 1978... Check out that DOOM breakdown in The Demon @ around 2:26 and tell me these guys never listened to Black Sabbath. I originally bought a copy of this in the early 80's and have no idea where that copy went. I turned this one up a while back and glad i did... This is some cool stuff right here. The pics on the back always reminded me of the Alex Harvey Band.... I never owned the LP from 1979 but here is a vid of a different version of Puppet Life... Still heavier than your average punk...!

Tank - (He Fell In Love With A) Stromtrooper - Blood, Guts and Beer - Live Version

I remember walking in to the "Peddler's Village" music store right around the year of this release (1982) and seeing this picture disk 7 inch and buying it. I think remember seeing that they were on tour with Motorhead at around this time, (most likely in an issue of Kerrang!) So i bought it... Tank were one of the few NWOBHM bands that kind of crossed over into the "punk" catagory and seeing as Bassist - Singer Algy Ward was once a member of The Damned that kind of makes sense. They had a no nonsense approach and were pretty straight forward. Bringing that Motorhead beer drinking no bullshit attitide infused with a slight punk vibe. This was all denim and leather. None of that glammy, look at me makeup and clothes bullshit. And i love it! Still do! When Algy cries, "What's Inside Me!? - Blood Guts & Beer!" I'm all in!

These guys and Holocaust are probably my fave early 80's metal for all of the reasons sited above.... NO BULLSHIT!

The Beast - Power Metal EP - Mutha 006 - 1983

OK Folks, gonn stick with punky side of things here and give you another rare New Jersey gem from 1983 on the Mutha label.

I think this is a very under rated Mutha release but i guess because its labeled "Metal" some folks don't want to give it props but besides the shredding guitar playing of "The Hinge" and some of the content of the lyrics this definitely has a punk quality to it.

The guitar playing is top notch by Jack "The Hinge" Pitzer who reminds me a lot of Jack Endino in the Skin Yard days. The Hinge was a long time sound guy at the Legendary Brighton Bar, Long Branch, NJ, where The Beast has played numerous times back in the day and then he went on the play with Greg Gory of the famed Chronic Sick in the band The X-Men with members of NJ Psych greats Secret Syde and Laughing Soup Dish, but that's all a different story entirely...

The Beast Consisted of Scott Ruth (vocals), Jack "The Hinge" Pitzer (guitar), Ronnie Ace (guitar), Jeff Grass (bass), Doug Ryan (drums) - This group emerged from the band TYRANT, which included Mark Mutha. Members of the band were also went on to RIPPING CORPSE, another great NJ thrash metal band.

I've been trying to hunt down and complete my Mutha record collection since back in the day and being from the eara i've been lucky but I'm missing a bunch but i do have a large quantity so stay tuned and I'm sure I'll get to more in the very near future. I think a posting of "The Worst" Expect the Worst might be in order next!

Here is the Mutha story:

MUTHA RECORDS
When it's more than just a great record - IT'S A MUTHA!

Sometime in 1977, THE WORST and SCHRAPNEL tore a hole in the "Springsteen" picture that had represented the Jersey Shore music scene (or "SOAP" - Sounds Of Asbury Park), and so began NJ's premier, strongest, and probably longest lasting Hardcore Punk scene.
In 1978, Mark "Mutha" Chesley was playing in a HM band called TYRANT. He left that band to become manager for The Worst, and soon began hosting Mutha Record Nights at his home in Long Branch, where he would play records by hard and heavy bands like The Stooges, MC5, Blue Cheer, as well as obscure psychedelic bands from the Sixties, and the latest offerings from British and American Punk bands. Under Mutha's watchful eye. Jersey Shore Hardcore bands began to take shape. THE WORST, THE BURNT, CHILD ABUSE, and FATAL RAGE were among the first bands to emerge from this new Mutha-land.
The Fast Lane in Asbury Park (where local bands could open for national acts like The Dictators, Black Flag, etc..) as well as The Hot-Dog House (a rented loft in Asbury) were host to many of the early shows that Mark and the local musicians helped organize. Soon, The Brighton Bar in West Long Branch became home for this growing scene, and remains active to this day. The turning point for the Hardcore scene occured when Mutha Records was established in 1982 - simply for the love of music and to prevent good bands from becoming just a memory. The first release was a 7" EP by THE WORST, followed shortly by releases by CHRONIC SICK, and PUBLIC DISTURBANCE. But Mutha Records was not restricted to Jersey Shore bands, as other bands in the NJ/NY area soon filled Mark's growing catalog. "I'm for the underdog...and the underground" stated Mark, and with his help, music by the bands listed on this page will be around forever - as it should be.

If anyone has a Mutha stuff for sale or trade drop me a line!
But for now enjoy The Beast EP and you won't have to sell your left arm to hear it...

Overkill - SST 008 - 1982; 7 Inch

Long before New Jersey/New York's Overkill, who's 1st EP w/ "Rotten to the Core" on it i dig but soon lost interest in, I had heard the West Coast Overkill on the 1st Blasting Concept and really dug the punky metal vibe of Hell's Getting Hotter. My love of the band was further enhanced when I heard them on the 2nd Blasting Concept doing "Over the Edge" i knew i had to track down all of their stuff, and so i did. And now i give the 1st 7 inch to you. And while it may have lost a bit of luster after 25 years and it certainly is not the greatest SST recording (that award goes out to The Stains who's 1983 release of 1981 recordings is THE SHIT in West Coast HC IMHO) this is still a nice visceral nugget of early 80's punk madness that i feel is right up there with the best of them....

Runnin' With The Devil - A Guest Mix Presented by Fufu Stew!!!

Happy Monday people or if you here on the East Coast happy wet Monday as it appears to be raining from Maine all the way to FLA....

But never fear we have something very special here to keep you indoors and dry for at least a little while, a very special guest mix by my man vincent from over at FuFu Stew and while most folks know him as a soul & funk cat, believe me his knowledge goes as deep as his crates when it comes to ALL kinds of wax.... Don't believe me? Just look at this mix!!!!!!!

I'd like to take this time to thank him for stopping over at the devil's music, for his hard work putting this together is HIGHLY appreciated! So without further ado, a few words from our sponsor!

Hello, kiddies.

I must say thank you to the mighty Devil Dick for allowing me to share this post with you. It's a far cry from the usual Funk and Soul that I normally serve up in the Fufu Stew kitchen, so fasten your seatbelts for I'm about to take you on a very loud and very fast ride.

Dateline: 1991... those were the days. Just old enough to drink, the club scene was far superior than it is now (here in Baltimore at any rate), and the botanical refreshments were much cheaper... My taste in music was much different then too. The flavour of the day was Industrial, Goth and in some cases even a little bit of Metal. The common thread being loud and fast grooves that would have one flailing around on the dance floor with reckless abandon. The mix that I give to you is a sample of what was piercing my ear drums when I went out to dance.

Runnin' With The Devil

Introspeak from the motion picture "Head"

01 Can You Dig It-Pop Will Eat Itself (RCA). I'm starting off kind of easy with this funky little alternative ditty from 1990 that was a definite floor filler when we went to Cignel on Friday nights.

02 No Name No Slogan-Acid Horse (Wax Trax). Here's one of the many and various side projects commandeered by Ministry's Al Jourgensen, this time a collab with Punk legends Cabaret Voltaire.

03 Headhunter-Front 242 (Wax Trax). It wasn't a good night in the clubs if you didn't hear at least one track from the kings of the Industrial scene. It was a special night if they played this one, one of my all tine favourites from 1989.

04 A Screw-The Swans (Some Bizarre). Here's a classic for the Goth freaks, with a surprisingly funky groove to counteract the droning guitar and sinister vocal.

05 Envoye-The Young Gods (Wax Trax). The first time I heard this Swiss outfit, I knew that I was in for a full on sonic assault. A generous helping of Industrial that kept both the Goths on the floor and the moshers in the pit.

06 Age Of Greed-Killing Joke (Noise International). This track from 1990 saw the return of the old Killing Joke style that was popular in the early 80s. Lyrically, it explains Jaz Coleman's displeasure of the direction the band was going in when most Punk acts were switching over to dance music. I was fortunate to get to see the band during this tour, and I can assure you the sound was loud and maniacal...

07 The Great American Nightmare-Rob Zombie Feat. Howard Stern (Warner). Although this track was released in 1996, the sound presented within certainly fits the overall Industrial theme.

08 950-Hilt (Nettwerk). Here's a side project from Canada's Skinny Puppy. I think this release from 1991 is their only effort.

09 You-Bad Brains (CD Presents). Here's one of Bad Brains' first recordings, taken from the comp "Rat Music For Rat People". The tempo on this one is much faster than the version on the "Black Dots" comp.

10 In My Veins-Prong (Spigot). Here's the metal portion of the show, taken from the Primitive Origins EP released in 1987.

11 The Nile Song-Zen Guerilla (Union Hall). Wind down just a bit with this ultra rare 45 from 1993. The music on this Pink Floyd cover is still loud enough though...

12 Babylon's Burning-The Ruts (RSO). Getting back to the early Punk stuff, here's a track from the Times Square soundtrack from 1980.

13 Fearless Vampire Killers-Bad Brains (Abstract). A pure Bad Brains staple, enough said...

14 Hold On-My Name (C/Z). Here's the first of three offerings from the storied "Teriyaki Asthma" EPs which saw the recording debut of Grunge legends Nirvana, along with other notables such as Alice Donut and L7.

15 Self Destruct-UK Subs (New Red Archives). I've had this Punk classic stuffed in the back of the crates for decades. For the first time in over ten years I pulled it out picking a random track to include here.

16 Forkboy-Lard (Alternative Tentacles). From the classic "The Last Temptation Of Reid", Ministry meets the Dead Kennedys. Enough said...

17 Pablo Picasso-Burning Sensations (San Andreas). I just recently saw "Repo Man" on cable a few weeks back which prompted me to pull out the soundtrack, hence this track's inclusion.

18 Solid Alligators-Yeast (C/Z). Here's one from the first "Teriyaki Asthma" EP...

19 The Radiated-Helios Creed (Amphetamine Reptile). With a name like Helios Creed, it's got to be good. It helps that we were long time Chrome fans too...

20 The Head Talks Cheese-Pitbull Babysitter (C/Z). Here's the last of the TA selections. This one comes from Vol. 2

21 Loose-Birthday Party (Strange Fruit). This Stooges cover is by far my all time favourite track from the mighty Nick Cave. It was recorded for the first of two John Peel sessions back in 1981.

22 Brothers Grimm (Live)-The Cult (Beggars Banquet). I finish up with this fairly rare track, recorded live at the Lyceum back in 1983. Some of you may still have the old Dreamtime cassette which contained the complete performance. If so, lucky you, because apparently they're pretty hard to come by. This one came from the b side of the Go West 12".

By now, you should be well exhausted...

Please download and enjoy Runnin' With The Devil, 71 MB

Here's the link to the mp3 file

Here's the link to the zip file

Again, I'm glad that I got to do this one for you. After a steady diet of Funk 45s for the past three years, hearing these old joints again was quite a welcome change of pace. It sure helped to relieve some of the stress that I've been under the past few weeks. I'll have to dig out some more of this stuff for another mix in the near future.

Peace and blessings.

Thank you Vincent!
I hope you all enjoyed this wild, raucous and noisy ride?
I know i did~!
Cheers!

Crow - Black Sabbath - Ike & Tina Turner & The Ikettes

Crow - Black Sabbath - Ike & Tina Turner & The Ikettes

What's the connection you say?

Why it's Evil Woman, Evil Man....

OK so i took the day off from work today hence the double posting....

Anyway, it's 1969 and Minneapolis blues-rock quintet Crow release the single "Evil Woman Don't You Play Your Games with Me" & it cracked the U.S. Top 20, even though its distinctive horn arrangement was overdubbed against the band's wishes.

The same year in England Black Sabbath are set to sign with Vertigo records when their manager at the time thinks it a good idea to cover the Crow "hit" to try and cash in. It is their first single and it makes the UK version of the self titled Black Sabbath album released in 69 on vertigo. When the album is released in 1970 in the US on Warner Brothers it is not on the album. (My copy with Evil Woman is an 80's pressing on Nems) On the Sab cut the horns are replaced by a guitar solo by Tony Iommi but he mimics the horns identically.

Now the same year, 1970, Ike must hear this tune and thinks it would be funky enough to have his old lady Tina sing it and turn the lyrics into "Evil Man". Which brings us to this point here. This is how Crow, Black Sabbath & Ike & Tina Turner are forever connected in the annals of rock & roll history...

Funky fresh yo!
