The other day Flipper's Bruce Loose asked to follow me on instagram... What a weird world... So today in honor of Bruce Loose follwing me on instagram i give you his "solo" 7 inch....
Flipper's Bruce Loose looses an "O" and goes solo with a quieter chaos that goes under the skin and heads for the heart. The stuff that insomnia is made of....
One day the world will see what an interesting and under-rated record this is... Or maybe not....

Whiteboys - Maybe I Do - Wasting My Time - Young Girls
In my lame attempt to find all thing NJ & NJ related i over paid for this "punk" rock 7-inch a while back. Actually it might have been part of a trade deal. Either way it was priced way to high and in a moment of weakness i snatched it up. You know how it is? You walk into a place with such anticipation that even if something is too much loot or you don't really need it, you don't want to walk away empty handed.... Anyway, its not a bad little record but nothing to earth shattering. Way more ROCK than PUNK.... Chalk off one more lame NJ record from my list.... Here is what hyped 2 death had to say about it below.
WHITEBOYS -Maybe I Do 3:44 (Sunrise Music)Orange, NJ '78: pre-Ambulance: Members of Orange, NJ's Whiteboys twice missed their shot at punk fame. Their only 45 has been kicking around for years in a "promotional-only" version that never had a PS. Radio and fanzines utterly ignored it and it never made it to retail. (Who knows if they ever gigged). Then they reconstituted as Ambulance and did a great 45 with a nebbishy pink PS that never even made the 50-cent bins, although it has belatedly ascended into the KBD whacko$phere.

De Maskers - Batman - The Saint

Ador Otting was inmiddels in 1997 overleden.

Crabby Appleton - Go Back - Try

Crabby Appleton was an American early 1970s band who scored a Top 40 hit with their first single, "Go Back."
The group is named after a character from the Tom Terrific cartoon.
This a terrific semi heavy pop tune with some nice guitar work. One of my faves.
The Flip "Try" aint to bad either. A semi funky rocker...
This is a European pressing picture sleeve.

Steel Pole Bathtub - Voodoo Chile - Arizona Garbage Truck

Steel Pole Bathtub w/ a great noisy take on the Hendrix classic and an equally noisy flip. I always liked these guys w/ their wild brand of post punk grungy psychedlic rock and samples galore. I was lucky enough to catch them here on the East Coast back around the time Lurch came out. Still even have my Lurch T-shirt.... Although it seems to have gotten smaller over time..... I still need a copy of Tulip on vinyl. Anyone?

You can check out their website HERE:
In the meantime, here is the Steel Pole Bathtub Wiki:
Steel Pole Bath Tub was a hardcore punk/noise rock band, formed in 1986 in Bozeman, Montana by Mike Morasky (guitar/vocals) and Dale Flattum (bass/vocals).
Morasky and Flattum moved the band to Seattle, Washington where Darren Mor-X (drums) joined the band, before they all moved to San Francisco, California.[when?] The band became known for their chaotic, noisy style and frequent use of television and movie samples, with several 7" singles and albums on Boner Records, before being signed to Slash Records and releasing their major label debut in 1995. Their signing to Slash was part of a mid-1990s free-for-all signing bonanza of alternative rock bands, particularly bands from the Northwestern United States in the wake of the surprising commercial success Geffen Records had with Nirvana, many of which ended in creative and ownership conflicts. Steel Pole Bath Tub and Slash's relationship was no different. The only album they ever released on Slash contained very few samples, which had previously been a staple of the band, at the insistence of Slash's legal department. The band hoped their second album for Slash would be a cover of The Cars' first album in its entirety, but the label would not allow that idea and then deemed the demos the band submitted (which contained three Cars covers) unlistenable and refused to release them. The band wouldn't release any more significant material until the rights to the music they recorded for Slash would revert to them 2002. In 2002, the band released those recordings as the album "Unlistenable", the title a play on a Slash executives comments on the material and reformed to play the Beyond the Pale festival at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco in November 2002, where they co-headlined with Neurosis and Tarantula Hawk.[1] They reunited to play a show at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Oregon on September 4, 2008 as a part of MusicFestNW.
The group's song "Train to Miami," from the album The Miracle of Sound in Motion, was featured in a November 2008 television ad for the PC and Xbox 360 game, Left 4 Dead.[2] Mike Morasky is also responsible for writing and performing the songs by the fictional band Midnight Riders in the game's sequel, Left 4 Dead 2.
Darren Mor-X
Side projects
The band joined with Jello Biafra to form the group Tumor Circus, releasing a self-titled album in 1991.
Milk Cult, with Morasky and Flattum (and sound man Eric Holland) using the names The Bumblebee and C.C. Nova, released 4 albums between 1992 and 2000. Their last album, Project M13, was the result of an invitation from the French Government to be guests of the La Friche Art Collective in Marseille.[3]
Dale Flattum
Novex, a Dale Flattum and Darren Mor-X project, recorded with Vern and Justin at the Unwound farm, released as Kleptophonica (2002).[4]

Pure Hell - These Boots Are Made For Walking - No Rules

Today i give you the 1st all black punk band Pure Hell:
Established in Philadelphia in 1974, during the flashpoint of the punk culture in New York City, London and Los Angeles. Pure Hell was the first all-Black punk band.
Amid the pioneers of the post garage, acid rock, glam-theatre era of the late 60's/early 70's, Pure Hell are considered one of the first of their kind, comparable to the Sex Pistols, Dead Boys, The Germs. Commercially, the band had little success, and only released this one single. There was an album recorded that was never released but it has since seen the light of day now.
oh yeah, this was produced by Curtis Knight!

Swastika Girls - Joey Ramoe Is Dead EP

This record is everything i hate & love about record collecting and music, from the mildly offensive name, totally inept playing, the one sided vinyl, the flip with some scrawled words written around in the circle of the disk, "You’re going to notice something, we decided to turn off the overhead music for a day, As our Nation continues to prosper and our lives proceed, we at 24 hour fitness want to create a quiet reminder of what occurred that terrible day. We hope that you think about your own workout, you’ll also take time to reflect upon both the suffering and selfless heroism that defined that day in our Nations history. We are glad you chose to spend a portion of it with us. Enjoy you’re quieter than usual workout…" the hand written sleeve with picture of someones vacation cut into the back side of the sleeve, obscure and hipster name dropping, this thing screams contrived, trying way to hard, hipster bullshit all over it. I'm sure these hipsters all sat around and patted each other on the back with smiles of utter joy and delight when this piece of shit came out and I’m sure Daddy paid for the pressing…
I don't know shit about this band and really i don't care much, i've already made my opinions about them and either way, i love this absolutely horrid piece of shit and it gives me hope of uncovering more beautifully horrible records for the mere price of 2 dollars....
Happy Labor Day you miserable lot!

The Lurkers - Out In The Dark EP - Beggers Banquet 19

Formed in London in 1977, the first-generation punk outfit the Lurkers originally comprised vocalist Howard Wall, guitarist Pete Stride, bassist Arturo Bassick (born Arthur Billingsley) and drummer Manic Esso (a.k.a. Pete Haynes). Trumpteted as Britain's answer to the Ramones, the group debuted with the single "Shadow," released on the fledgling Beggars Banquet label; Bassick soon exited, and with ex-Saints bassist Kim Bradshaw, the Lurkers reached the U.K. Top Ten with the follow-ups "Ain't Got a Clue' and "I Don't Need to Tell Her." Their debut LP Fulham Fallout appeared in 1978, with God's Lonely Men arriving the next year. By the early 1980s, the Lurkers had dissolved, reuniting intermittently during the course of the decade to yield LPs including 1989's Edge of the Mountain and the live Wild Times Again.
The Lurkers get high marks for being relatively early in the punk game here (1979) and the 1st 2 tracks on this ep are pretty cool if not a little flat after 30 years, i'm sure in 79 this sounded like a bullet now i'm not so sure... but they lose almost everything they gained with by wearing their influences way to proudly on their sleeve on the 2nd side by ripping off The Ramones w/ Suzie is a Floozie and trying waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to hard to be The Clash (Christ wasn't one clash enough?) w/ a "dub" or pub version of a pretty ripping song Cyanide... But what the fuck do i know...??? So what do you think? Important punk document or B grade mimicking?

Snakefinger - The Spot - Smelly Tongues

Here is the soundtrack to my nightmares from last night:
Philip Charles Lithman (June 17, 1949 - July 1, 1987), who performed under the stage name Snakefinger, was an English musician, singer and songwriter. A multi-instrumentalist, he was best known for his guitar and violin work and his collaborations with The Residents.
Lithman was born in Tooting, South London, and came from the British Blues scene. He moved to San Francisco in 1971 and became associated with the avant-garde group The Residents. It is said he was given the name 'Snakefinger' by The Residents themselves when they saw his proficiency with the guitar during their first live performance together. Another explanation for the name comes from a story concerning a party in San Francisco, at The Residents' collective, wherein all in attendance watched Lithman's fingers dart snake-like at the neck of his violin.
In 1972 Lithman returned to England and formed the pub rock band Chilli Willi & The Red Hot Peppers with Martin Stone, ex-member of Mighty Baby and a fellow ex-member of Junior's Blues Band. As a duo, they released the album Kings of Robot Rhythm. In 1974, as a full band and popular live act in Britain, they released Bongos Over Balham.
Chilli Willi lasted until 1975, their last record not selling well, and by 1976 Lithman was back in the United States, this time in Los Angeles, California, seeking a recording contract, shopping his rock-style demos.
After a few years, Lithman moved back to San Francisco, reconnected with The Residents, and performed and recorded with them. Lithman's solo records, recorded under the name Snakefinger, were released by their record label Ralph Records.
His first album on Ralph was Chewing Hides the Sound in 1979, featuring original material co-written with The Residents as well as esoteric covers like Kraftwerk's "The Model". The songs showcased Lithman's distinctive slide guitar playing and often surreal imagery. This album was followed by Greener Postures in 1980, which included his first solo compositions as Snakefinger.
While on tour in Australia in 1980, Lithman had a heart attack that left him hospitalized for six months.
In 1982 Lithman formed his backing band The Vestal Virgins with former Captain Beefheart sideman Eric Drew Feldman. Snakefinger and The Vestal Virgins released Manual of Errors on Ralph in 1982. This was followed by the blues cover album Snakefinger's History of the Blues: Live in Europe in 1984 and a new collection of largely original material in 1986 called Night of Desirable Objects.
Lithman performed with The Residents on their 13th Anniversary Tour in 1986. On July 1, 1987, Snakefinger and his band, The Vestal Virgins, were in Linz, Austria, on the European Night tour. During a performance at the Posthof Club Lithman suffered a fatal heart attack. On that same day his single, "There's No Justice in Life", was released.
Ironic wouln't you say...?

Anti Nowhere League - I Hate People

And now for something completely different!
i'm feeling a bit surly today so here is some gnarly English punk to match my mood.
when i first heard these guys back in the early 80's this was about the most obscene ugly shit i ever heard and i loved it. A far cry from the dungeons & dragons bullshit of most metal that was going on and these guys weren't a
"political" band, they just seemed to be telling the story of their lives and those lives seemed to be pretty fucked up... i guess it was pretty real.... but to this suburban teenage kid from NJ it was a whole new world.
Anti-Nowhere League are an English punk band formed in 1980, by lead singer Animal (real name Nick Culmer) and rhythm guitarist Magoo (real name Chris Exall), with Bones [real name Tony Shaw] on drums and Baggy Elvy on bass.
Their first gig was at Tunbridge Wells, on the day of the annual carnival, at which they got arrested. This led to their first press coverage with the local newspaper describing their gig as a 'cacophony of noise'. In 1981, Gooky (who left the same year), Hopper and Clive "Winston" Blake came in on lead guitar, drums and bass respectively, although Hopper was quickly replaced with PJ ('Persian John') (real name Djahanshah Aghssa). They managed to get a slot in The Exploited's Apocalypse tour, along with Chron Gen and Anti Pasti. This led to them signing to John Curd's record label WXYZ, with Curd and Chris Gabrin co-managing the band.
Later that year, they also opened for The Damned on a short tour round the north of England and Scotland. November 1981 saw the release of their first single, a cover version of Ralph McTell's "Streets of London", with the song that was to become the group's anthem, "So What" on the B-side.
In 1982, they took part in the 'So What Tour' in the company of such groups as Chelsea, Chron Gen and the Defects, and the release of their debut album We Are...The League. However, the Obscene Publications Squad seized all copies of their records, which were removed from retailers and they were banned from TV and radio. In addition, they were removed from the Top Of The Pops recording studio because Animal was carrying a 3ft axe around with him. The year finished with the 'Hardcore Storms America' tour with the UK Subs.
some other lame shit happened the next few years and they called it quits in 1989 with some more boring bullshit happening with those stupid ass fucking millionaire rock stars metallica and blah blah blah....
looks like they are on some sort of a comeback tour or some shit.... read about it here if you care or dare....

Steel Mill - Summer's Child - Get On The Line

Seeing as I did a whole set of "Kraut Rock" on my radio show last night i will go in that direction here to start off the weekend.
Steel Mill are one of the most mysterious groups to have existed (or not!). The sleeve-notes of the CD re-release of their one and only album detail how the author tried in vain to track down some historical information about the band. All roads were however dead-ends, to the extent that even the British Musicians Union has no record of the any of the band members.
Their sole album is a very expensive record in its original format. And "get on the line" from this single is a Non-Album cut!
I can do little here but relate extracts from the liner notes from the 1994 CD re-release of their one and only album, "Green Eyed God". These were written by Mark Brennan, who documented his efforts to find out some background information on the band thus:
"I first spoke to producer John Schroder who recalled the band's name and the fact that the LP was recorded at London's De Lane Lea studios, but other than that he had no recollection of the album.
Larry Page, the legendary producer/manager who owned Penny Farthing records who released (the two singles and one album by the band) could not recall a thing about Steel Mill.
Jeff Wilkins who worked for Lovigny Marquee the production company who signed Steel Mill, also proved to have little recollection of the band or the whereabouts (of the members).
The British Musicians Union had no record of any of the members, and even the normally reliable collectors shops knew of their releases, but not their history."
The sleeve notes end with appeal for any information to be forwarded to the author at Repertiore Records!
These cuts are from the 2nd single by the most mysterious bands of all time and from, as always, my personal collection!

Bl'ast! - Schools Out

breaking away from the Soul & Funk here for a little Hardcore Punk via the West Coast.
Damn i bought this thing over 20 yers ago!!!
This is one west coast band that i am bummed i never got to see and i got to see a bunch of good ones here on the east coast, including Dr. Know, Battalion of Saints but never did get to see Bl'ast...
These guys were a wicked crew with a wicked brew of punk, hardcore and metal ala black sabbath riffs thick with resin....
here's the lowdown:
BL'AST! formed in 1983 The original line up consisted of Clifford Dinsmore on vocals Mike Neider Steve Stevenson on guitars, Dave Cooper on bass, and Bill Torgerson on drums. To make their logo visually "more dynamic," they added an apostrophe to fill in the gap between the letters L and A and tacked an exclamation point on to the end. This doesn't affect the actual pronunciation of the word. Their sound, a unique mix of bands like Black Flag, SSD and Black Sabbath, is quite hard to categorize, lying somewhere in the void between hardcore and hard rock. – "BL'AST! was never a typical sounding punk band and even back in the day we were really technical and metal influenced." – Although released by seminal punk label SST Records, BL'AST is also referenced in Brian Walsby's book on metal, Manchild 2.
Stevenson left the group at some point between the release of The Power of Expression and the recording of It's In My Blood. He was briefly replaced by Kip DuVall, former guitarist of Atlanta, Georgia's Neon Christ. DuVall contributed a small bit of song writing to the second album (credited as "Dr. Twang") but left the band before the recording sessions took place. Blast continued with Neider as the sole guitarist from that point on. Stevenson remained friends with his former bandmates and even went on the road with them, serving as a roadie.
Cooper left in 1989 and was replaced by a string of newcomers. Over the course of the next few years, Blast recorded a series of demos which showcased a new sound for the band as they began to dabble in funk.
Dinsmore left the group sometime in the early 90's and co-founded the band Spaceboy. The rest continued on without him, with Neider taking over vocal duties. They eventually changed their name to Blackout (releasing two 7" EPs under that name) and then again to Lab (who also put out a 7" EP, as well as a hard-to-find 4-song CD you could only get along with a Santa Cruz Skateboards order), continuing into the late 90's.
Bl'ast! briefly reunited in 2001, playing a handful shows on the West Coast. They were also planning to record again, but unfortunately the band fell apart before that materialized. Dinsmore is now the lead vocalist of the band Gargantula. Neider has a new band in the works featuring former KYUSS/QOTSA/Che'/Sort of Quartet/Across the River member Alfredo Hernandez and former Che'/UNIDA bassist Dave Dinsmore who also had played in bla'st! for many years. Rumored to be laying down vocals on some tracks is John Garcia of KYUSS/UNIDA/Hermano infamy.
California stoner band Fu Manchu pay homage to Bl'ast! via the titles of a song "Laserbl'ast!" from The Action is Go and records Something Beyond EP and Start the Machine which are both named after Bl'ast! songs.

The Damned - Problem Child

I've always fancied myself more of a pistols man than a damned man but there is no denying the greatness of this single.
Often credited as the 1st "punk" band or at least the 1st punk band to release a single, release an album and the 1st to tour the United States (they were from England)I have to say "Bollocks" to that! as everyone knows the Stooges put out records in 19-fucking-69 baby!
But anyway.... this little Stiff nugget was released in 1977 and produced by Pink Floyd man Nick Mason after an unsuccessful attempt at getting Syd Barret to produce. weird huh? me thinks so too.....
Lemmy from Motorhead was briefly in the band or at least as a studio session man and for a few live gigs.
Original Damned members Dave Vanian (David Lett), Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns), and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) had been members of the Masters of the Backside, which included future Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde. Original Damned guitarist Brian James (Brian Robertson) had been a member of the punk band London SS, who never played live but included musicians who later found fame in The Clash and Generation X. Scabies auditioned as drummer for London SS, but was rejected. James and Scabies had invited Sid Vicious and Dave Vanian to audition to be the singer of The Damned. Only Vanian showed up, and thus became the frontman of the band.
Heh, imagine if Sid had gotten the gig....?
History may have very well been different...? Naw, he would have died anyway i'm sure....
I did see the Damned a few years ago at some punk fest thing here in NJ and they were actually still quite good.
PLEASE enjoy some great English punk on this Saturday morning.

Devo - Be Stiff

Looooong before Nickelodeon's Rugrats there was Devo.
Progressive? Punk? New wave? new traditionalists? all of the above?
This is devo's 3rd single & was produced by Brian Eno in 1978 on Stiff records. i was 12 and listening to kiss... when i heard these guys for the first time i thought "what is this strange music?" kind of like when i first saw captain beefheart and i was never the same again...
Of course i dig on all the early devo but i have a fondness for this cut because of the sharp cutting & angular guitar.
I highly doubt that there is anything to add that has not been written about these Akron Ohio misfits of De-Evolution so if your not familiar or even if you are, i'm sure its been a while so dig in and be stiff!!!
