The Devil's Music Devil Dick Mix - Vol. 2 - RAWK POWER!!!

Happy Friday/weekend people!!!

Wow! After Vincent's HEATER of a mix i thought i'd continue on with some more "RAWK POWER"!!! and bring some noise in the form of some nice guitar driven action!!! and of course as always brought to you on glorious original VINYL!!! (but i didn't have to tell you that did i?)

Here's a few new things i threw together for your ears, eyes, & mind, consisting of a few things i picked up recently along with a few of some of my fave rockers!!!

So strap in, hit the start switch & please enjoy The Devil's Music Mix - Ship on the Ocean, Time is Now! - RAWK POWER!!! Mix!!!!

1. Asterix - If I Could Fly: Asterix was a direct predecessor of Lucifer's Friend; released one (eponymous) album in 1970. Technically, this was the first Lucifer's Friend album, only under a different name. Also, one single was released featuring a slightly altered line-up. This cut is from that single. This a fairly new addition to the devil's archives and a cut i've been looking for for many years!

2. Jeronimo - Heya: German band Jeronimo was founded in 1969 and in '69/'70 they had their first two hits "He Ya" and "Na Na Hey Hey". With these two chartbreakers, Jeronimo climbed to the number 1 position in almost all European countries. This cut is from the 1st 45.

3. Groundhogs - Ship On The Ocean: One of my favorite songs of all time hence the sub or pre title of this mix: The Groundhogs were one of the finest of the British blues based rock bands of the 60’s & 70’s, this cut can be found on what IMHO is their finest moment, the awesome “Thank Christ for the Bomb” lp, however this particular cut is from the 45 and as above one of my all time faves.

4. Jericho Jones - Time Is Now: Jericho Jones were an Israeli band founded in 1965 under the name The Churchills , and was active until the mid-70s, later shortening the name to just Jericho. They were part of the rhythm bands scene that were active in Israel in the 70s, especially in Ramala. They played rock music in English, from psychedelic rock to hard rock. This is an awesome piece of Israeli hard rock!

5. Dust - Chasin' Ladies: At the dawn of the '70s, hard rock and early heavy metal were almost completely dominated by British innovators. Dust was one of the few American bands to try picking up the gauntlet, playing a progressive brand of proto-metal that was explicitly indebted to their British contemporaries. Formed around 1968, the group featured vocalist/guitarist Richie Wise and the teenaged rhythm section of bassist Kenny Aaronson (who also doubled on slide and steel guitars) and drummer Marc Bell, who would later become part of the New York punk scene, joining up with Richard Hell & the Voidoids and then moving on to the Ramones (adopting the name Marky Ramone). Some serious power trio action on this cut from the 1st self-titled lp.

6. Cactus - One Way Or Another: The plan was for the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice to join with guitar god Jeff Beck and his singer Rod Stewart in a supergroup of sorts. The plan was derailed when Beck had a motorcycle accident that incapacitated him for 18 months. Stewart then joined pal Ron Wood in the revamped Faces (and pursued a somewhat lucrative solo career), leaving Bogert and Appice to find alternates for their dream band. They recruited guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder's disassembling Detroit Wheels, and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. And thus “Cactus” was born.

7. Savoy Brown - She's got a ring in his nose and a ring on her hand: Savoy Brown were another great British Blues based rock band from the 60's & 70's, with Lonesome Dave Peverett later of Foghat handling vocal duties on this snazy little ditty.

8. B. Lance - John The Rollin' Man: Here is some excellent rural, backwoods-vibed Folk-Rock to further ease you down from the heavy rock ledge!
This cut is from his one and only album from 1972 on Atlantic records called "Rollin' Man". The B. is short for Bob.

9. Plastic People - Dancin' & Drinkin': Plastic people formed in 1967 by Guitarist, lyricist, and vocalist John Earl Walker, three years later they changed the name of the band to “Plum Nelly” who recorded several albums for Capitol Records in the mid-'70s, and gained national exposure opening shows for B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Alice Cooper, and Iggy Pop, to name just a few.
Dancin' and Drinkin' - what better way to end this mix...???

The Egyptian Combo - Rockin' Little Egypt

I hope all had a good if not great mother's day? I did. a wonderful dinner at the Anchor Inn with family and friends (including a few drinks) was had by all and now were back to work here @ the devil's music:

This group has been around on the St. Louis music scene for something like half a century, with no sign of disappearing. The main members are guitarist Lloyd Rainey and the brothers Doug and Rick Linton, although some formations of the group have only featured one Linton. The group was first formed in 1961, and in three years time had recorded a song entitled "Gale Winds" which became first a breakaway regional hit, then wound up climbing as high as number seven on the Billboard charts. The single made hit parade charts throughout the Midwest, for example showing up right below Martha and the Vandellas and "Dancing in the Street" on a Chicago radio hit parade from the late spring of 1964. There was even a cover version of this song done by Quitman Dennis and the Escorts. The only other Egyptian Combo record to see any kind of chart action was "I Don't Care Anymore" featuring the vocal talents of saxophonist Kevin Cox. This record barely cracked the Top 100 in 1967. Many of the band's recordings were done at the same St. Louis studio. A label called Norman which has released much rock and jazz music from the St. Louis area pumped out singles by the band, but following the success in 1964, in stepped Dot with its larger circulation. The band signed on for gigs at a string of Playboy clubs around the country and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. A new contract had just been inked with MGM when Uncle Sam came along with a different offer.

Much of the group's music fits under the loose label of instrumental rock, similar in some ways to bands such as the Ventures, but not devoted exclusively to the surf music sound. Founding member Rainey wrote music for the band, including the main hit. But it also recorded various instrumental themes of the day, coming out with its own version of "Watermelon Man" when that song soundtrack theme was popular, for example, or cutting the "Theme From Dr. Zhivago" when "Lara's Song" from that weepy film was a chart smash. The original incarnation of the group featured an instrumental lineup typical of a combo of this type in the '60s, including a rhythm section, dual electric guitars, and a pair of honking saxophones. The band tried to push a more science fiction angle with a single entitled "The Invaders Are Here," written for a 1965 television show The Invaders, but ultimately rejected. Frontman Mike Adkins joined the lineup by 1966 but didn't stay long. In 1967 there was an emphasis on brass, with Rick Linton switching to trumpet and the addition of Ellis McKenzie on trombone. In 1968 a smaller version of the band undertook a tour of army bases in Vietnam. The so-called Uncle Sam tour featured a slimmed-down quartet version of the combo, in other words, the four of them that happened to get drafted. The regional popularity of the band was so intense at this point that local television stations within a tri-state area actually broadcast the induction of the members into the army and reported on their activities overseas from time to time. Cox was the first to be sent home, due to spinal problems. The slimmed-down band was a harbinger of things to come. It also made for an unusual lineup: a simple rhythm team of electric guitar and drums providing back up for trombone and trumpet. Perhaps the music this group played sounded so strange the military decided to send them home early, although at first it seemed like the idea was to escalate, sending in more troops to perhaps fill out the rhythm section in the bargain. But thankfully the musicians all made it home safely. The original three members provided the nucleus for all further members of the band, and by the group's 40th anniversary, Egyptian Combo was again a quartet with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Chris Thornton. Repertoire has evolved into a collection of cover songs that rivals any bar band, including music from the '60s and '70s, expertly played, as well as numbers from some of the group's earlier singles. Bandmember Doug Linton also fronted a band named Prana in the '70s and got heavily into heavy metal and progressive rock. In 2001 he contributed wonderfully to an internet audio tribute to the classic heavy rock band Bloodrock, by dusting off a cover version of the group's song "Kool Aid Kids" that he had recorded back in the '70s with Prana...

The Devil's Music - Devil Dick Mix - At the Montains of Madness Psych Mix Vol. 3, Pt. 2

When I found out DJ Pres was doing this guest DJ mix thing I thought I’d put together a killer Fuzzy and Funky mix for him but when I talked to him on the phone he was all about getting some Psychedelic jams together…. I was more than happy to oblige.

It was pretty tough picking out the tunes in this mix because I could have gone on for days and days without stopping but I wanted to keep it brief and to the point and then I thought shit man, I have so many tunes I want to use why not do a sister mix!?! So I did!

I put together not 1 but 2 great sampling’s of late 60’s & early 70’s psychedelic music with some wicked fuzzy guitar tones mixed throughout, lot’s of killer organ work, some smooth but pumping bass lines and last but not least some trippy vocals and lyrics. Keep your dancing shoes under your bed for this one but bust out that bean bag chair from the attic and dust of your lava lamp, plug in you “Black Light”, break out your “sack” & burn, burn, burn!!!

So if you dig what is laying out here for your ears stop over to Flea Market Funk for the Twin of “At the Mountains of Madness Pt. 1”

Morgen - Welcome to the Void: "ABC Record's valiant attempt at the 'hip/youth' market, Probe, released many memorable LP's by such groups as Saint Steven and The Litter along with debut offerings by Zephyr, Soft Machine and Rare Bird, but none generate the frenzy at this late date quite like the quartet led by guitarist/vocalist Steve Morgen, first unleashed in 1969. Even before dropping needle on groove, the stark black-and-white sleeve with inset Edvard Munch lithograph, in contrast to the multicoloured hues so prevalent then, makes an immediate statement. And then the music makes another immediate statement... A foreboding bass riff and staccato drumming introduce 'Welcome To The Void', and for the next thirty-eight minutes one is hurled headlong into a vortex of dual-guitar overload, lyrically woven with romantic and Victorian imagery residing on a tab of microdot. Radio stations didn't bite on the single, Probe closed up shop, and the world became a decidedly sadder place."

Saint Steven - Gladcadova: Saint Steven is actually Steve Cataldo, who had previously been the guitarist and singer/songwriter for the minor late-'60s Boston psychedelic band Front Page Review. His 1969 album, also called Saint Steven, was similarly period psychedelia, w/ some Pop/rock and folk-rock sensibilities were sprinkled with bits of odd sound effects (animal roars, 1968 Republican Convention soundbites, etc.)

Eden's Children - Sure Looks Real: From Boston The Children were a three piece group. Larry Kiley the bass player and Jimmy Sturman the drummer were a constantly interesting rhythm section. The main songwriter/singer was Richard 'Sham' Schamach who was also a great guitar player. This cut from the 2nd album is from 1969. "Sure Looks Real" is nice Smooth vocal Pop that leads into an Awesome solo FUZZ ATTACK!

Lemon Pipers - I Was Not Born To Follow: The Lemon Pipers included singer Ivan Browne, guitarist William Bartlett, keyboardist R.G. Nave, bassist Steve Walmsley, and drummer William Albaugh. The group is best known for their number-one bubblegum hit "Green Tambourine" and several followups, all written by the team of Paul Leka and Shelley Pinz. The group actually wanted to play more psychedelic music; they only recorded "Green Tambourine" because their label would have dropped them had they refused. These guys get overlooked because of their "hit".

C.A. Quintet - Cold Spider: A major rarity and a major freak out record, C.A. Quintet's "Trip Thru Hell" is a spooky, murky, macabre vision. Genuinely original and chilling expeacially considering it's release date of 1968.

Fever Tree - The Man Who Paints the Pictures: Texas psych from 1968, the self-titled debut album of this unfairly neglected psychedelic band is an odd mix of slick studio work laced with surprising moments of eclecticism, from soundtrack references to hard rock worthy of the best bands of the time.

Things to Come - Dancer: Emerging from the glut of Southern Californian rock groups in the mid-'60s, Things to Come formed in 1966. Their original lineup included lead singer Steve Runolfsson, drummer Russ Kunkel (who would go on to become a top sessionman), and bassist Bryan Garofalo (also a future sessionman and a member of Glenn Frey's band since 1982). The group cut only three singles in their brief lifetime. This cut is from a 60's comp called "Speed Kills" which was made and sold to benefit "drug abusers".... heh...

Art - I Think I'm Going Weird: Classic but little known 60's Brit psych band that would later evolve into the much more know band "Spooky Tooth" released in 1967 this a "real" psychedelic record that is vamped in echo, swirling guitars, strong vocal melodies, heavy guitar riffing and great use of effects. Early & Classic indeed...!

H.P. Lovecraft - Mobin's Trip / At the Mountains of Madness: Featuring two strong singers (who often sang dual leads), hauntingly hazy arrangements, and imaginative songwriting that drew from pop and folk influences, H.P. Lovecraft was one of the better psychedelic groups of the late '60s. The band was formed by ex-folky George Edwards in Chicago in 1967. Edwards and keyboardist Dave Michaels, a classically trained singer with a four-octave range, handled the vocals, which echoed Jefferson Airplane's in their depth and blend of high and low parts. I had to end with "At the Mountains of Madness" since this is the "sister" mix to the Flea market Funk mix that ends w/ a song of the same title...

Runnin' With The Devil - A Guest Mix Presented by Fufu Stew!!!

Happy Monday people or if you here on the East Coast happy wet Monday as it appears to be raining from Maine all the way to FLA....

But never fear we have something very special here to keep you indoors and dry for at least a little while, a very special guest mix by my man vincent from over at FuFu Stew and while most folks know him as a soul & funk cat, believe me his knowledge goes as deep as his crates when it comes to ALL kinds of wax.... Don't believe me? Just look at this mix!!!!!!!

I'd like to take this time to thank him for stopping over at the devil's music, for his hard work putting this together is HIGHLY appreciated! So without further ado, a few words from our sponsor!

Hello, kiddies.

I must say thank you to the mighty Devil Dick for allowing me to share this post with you. It's a far cry from the usual Funk and Soul that I normally serve up in the Fufu Stew kitchen, so fasten your seatbelts for I'm about to take you on a very loud and very fast ride.

Dateline: 1991... those were the days. Just old enough to drink, the club scene was far superior than it is now (here in Baltimore at any rate), and the botanical refreshments were much cheaper... My taste in music was much different then too. The flavour of the day was Industrial, Goth and in some cases even a little bit of Metal. The common thread being loud and fast grooves that would have one flailing around on the dance floor with reckless abandon. The mix that I give to you is a sample of what was piercing my ear drums when I went out to dance.

Runnin' With The Devil

Introspeak from the motion picture "Head"

01 Can You Dig It-Pop Will Eat Itself (RCA). I'm starting off kind of easy with this funky little alternative ditty from 1990 that was a definite floor filler when we went to Cignel on Friday nights.

02 No Name No Slogan-Acid Horse (Wax Trax). Here's one of the many and various side projects commandeered by Ministry's Al Jourgensen, this time a collab with Punk legends Cabaret Voltaire.

03 Headhunter-Front 242 (Wax Trax). It wasn't a good night in the clubs if you didn't hear at least one track from the kings of the Industrial scene. It was a special night if they played this one, one of my all tine favourites from 1989.

04 A Screw-The Swans (Some Bizarre). Here's a classic for the Goth freaks, with a surprisingly funky groove to counteract the droning guitar and sinister vocal.

05 Envoye-The Young Gods (Wax Trax). The first time I heard this Swiss outfit, I knew that I was in for a full on sonic assault. A generous helping of Industrial that kept both the Goths on the floor and the moshers in the pit.

06 Age Of Greed-Killing Joke (Noise International). This track from 1990 saw the return of the old Killing Joke style that was popular in the early 80s. Lyrically, it explains Jaz Coleman's displeasure of the direction the band was going in when most Punk acts were switching over to dance music. I was fortunate to get to see the band during this tour, and I can assure you the sound was loud and maniacal...

07 The Great American Nightmare-Rob Zombie Feat. Howard Stern (Warner). Although this track was released in 1996, the sound presented within certainly fits the overall Industrial theme.

08 950-Hilt (Nettwerk). Here's a side project from Canada's Skinny Puppy. I think this release from 1991 is their only effort.

09 You-Bad Brains (CD Presents). Here's one of Bad Brains' first recordings, taken from the comp "Rat Music For Rat People". The tempo on this one is much faster than the version on the "Black Dots" comp.

10 In My Veins-Prong (Spigot). Here's the metal portion of the show, taken from the Primitive Origins EP released in 1987.

11 The Nile Song-Zen Guerilla (Union Hall). Wind down just a bit with this ultra rare 45 from 1993. The music on this Pink Floyd cover is still loud enough though...

12 Babylon's Burning-The Ruts (RSO). Getting back to the early Punk stuff, here's a track from the Times Square soundtrack from 1980.

13 Fearless Vampire Killers-Bad Brains (Abstract). A pure Bad Brains staple, enough said...

14 Hold On-My Name (C/Z). Here's the first of three offerings from the storied "Teriyaki Asthma" EPs which saw the recording debut of Grunge legends Nirvana, along with other notables such as Alice Donut and L7.

15 Self Destruct-UK Subs (New Red Archives). I've had this Punk classic stuffed in the back of the crates for decades. For the first time in over ten years I pulled it out picking a random track to include here.

16 Forkboy-Lard (Alternative Tentacles). From the classic "The Last Temptation Of Reid", Ministry meets the Dead Kennedys. Enough said...

17 Pablo Picasso-Burning Sensations (San Andreas). I just recently saw "Repo Man" on cable a few weeks back which prompted me to pull out the soundtrack, hence this track's inclusion.

18 Solid Alligators-Yeast (C/Z). Here's one from the first "Teriyaki Asthma" EP...

19 The Radiated-Helios Creed (Amphetamine Reptile). With a name like Helios Creed, it's got to be good. It helps that we were long time Chrome fans too...

20 The Head Talks Cheese-Pitbull Babysitter (C/Z). Here's the last of the TA selections. This one comes from Vol. 2

21 Loose-Birthday Party (Strange Fruit). This Stooges cover is by far my all time favourite track from the mighty Nick Cave. It was recorded for the first of two John Peel sessions back in 1981.

22 Brothers Grimm (Live)-The Cult (Beggars Banquet). I finish up with this fairly rare track, recorded live at the Lyceum back in 1983. Some of you may still have the old Dreamtime cassette which contained the complete performance. If so, lucky you, because apparently they're pretty hard to come by. This one came from the b side of the Go West 12".

By now, you should be well exhausted...

Please download and enjoy Runnin' With The Devil, 71 MB

Again, I'm glad that I got to do this one for you. After a steady diet of Funk 45s for the past three years, hearing these old joints again was quite a welcome change of pace. It sure helped to relieve some of the stress that I've been under the past few weeks. I'll have to dig out some more of this stuff for another mix in the near future.

Peace and blessings.

Thank you Vincent!
I hope you all enjoyed this wild, raucous and noisy ride?
I know i did~!
Cheers!

Willie Colón - MC2 (Theme Realidades)

Latin Funk Supreme!

The Devil's Music quietly slipped passed 1 million hits over the labor Day Weekend and i was to busy out & about to really do any "blog" celebrating, but I did pick up this wicked Latin funk 45 for a mere 50 cents over the weekend. So here goes, in honor of my one millionth hit.... MC2 by Willie Colon from 1975 on the Fania label.

As for Mr. Colon, here is his Wiki:

William Anthony Colón (born 28 April 1950) is a Nuyorican salsa musician. Primarily a trombonist, Colón also sings, writes, produces and acts. He is also involved in municipal politics in New York City.

Willie Colón was born in the South Bronx, New York, to Puerto Rican parents. He picked up the trumpet from a young age, and later switched to trombone, inspired by the all-trombone sound of Mon Rivera and Barry Rogers. He spent some summers at his maternal grandmother’s sister’s (La finca de Celín y Ramón) farm in in the outskirts of Manatí, Puerto Rico on the road to neighboring Ciales, Puerto Rico.[1]
He was signed to Fania Records at 15 and recorded his first album at age 17, which ultimately sold more than 300,000 copies. Due to fortuitous events, the main record producer at Fania at the time, Johnny Pacheco, recommended Héctor Lavoe to him.[2]
Mr. Colón has been a civil rights, community and political activist since the age of 16. He has served as a member of the Latino Commission on AIDS and the United Nations Immigrant Foundation, President of the Arthur Schomburg Coalition for a Better New York, member of the Board of Directors of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.[3] In 1995, Mr. Colón became the first minority to serve on the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) national board and is now a member of the ASCAP FOUNDATION.[4][5]

Musical career

Beyond the trombone, he has also worked as a composer, arranger, and singer, and eventually as a producer and director. Combining elements of jazz, rock, and salsa, his work incorporates the rhythms of traditional music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and "that 'other' ancestral homeland, Africa", representing the mostly one-way flow from Puerto Rico to the New York-based diaspora.[6] "His life and music commute back and forth between his home turf in the Bronx and his ancestral Puerto Rico, with more than casual stop-offs in other musical zones of the Caribbean."[6] Colón "makes the relation between diaspora and Caribbean homeland the central theme of his work," particularly in his 1971 Christmas album, Asalto navideño.[6] The lyrics and music of the songs on this album "enact the diaspora addressing the island culture in a complex, loving but at the same time mildly challenging way."[6][7]
He went on to have many successful collaborations with salsa musicians and singers such as Ismael Miranda, Celia Cruz and Soledad Bravo, and singer-songwriter Rubén Blades.[8] On his website, Colón claims to hold the "all time record for sales in the Salsa genre, [having] created 40 productions that have sold more than thirty million records worldwide."[9]
One significant overarching theme in Colón's music, which draws from many cultures and several different styles, is an exploration of the competing associations that Puerto Ricans have with their home and with the United States. Colón uses his songs to depict and investigate the problems of living in the U.S. as a Puerto Rican,[10] and also to imply the cultural contributions that Puerto Ricans have to offer.[6]

Record's of the day, missed WFMU record fair & run in w/ the soul invaders 45 guy...

I didn't make it up to the WMFU record fair as I am trying to be thrifty these days, i have some things coming up that are going to require some cash. IE, studio time w/ my band solace and plain tickets to London for a one off gig w/ Orange Goblin Nov. 8th but i did manage to get out to one of the flea markets and buy some trash.

So today i give you my 2 new latest editions to the devil's music record cover club.
Both for a buck. I also got some odd ball 78's and a few minor league rock records as well as some really cool and "odd" jazz, soundtrack, electronic, spoken word and folkways type ethnic records.

I have my fingers crossed as a friend of my mother has informed her that a relative has just passed away and he had a "HUGE" record collection and asked my mom if her son, that being me was interested. well of course! so we shall see how that pans out.

I also had another run in with the guy who had the soul invaders inc 45 and all i can say is the guy is pretty out there. He seems real "odd" about parting with this 45. he says he still has it and that he is going to "give" it to me if i buy all of his 78's he has but when i ask him what kind of 78's he has he tells me he doesn't know. Well i aint buying things sight unseen ya know...??? so I don't know what is going to happen with this damn 45! I have my fingers crossed but I aint holdin' my breath ya know what i mean?

The Smith Brothers - Sinner's Dream

To Prove that anything and everything goes here at the devil's music and after a few great funky soul cuts from The Triumphs & Alvin Cash, and then some blistering heavy psych, we now switch it up even further with some fine hillbilly country gospel music with The Smith Brothers from 1953.

The Smith Brothers, Smitty and Tennessee, were born in a small town called Oneida, Tennessee into a musical family. The boys learned to sing the gospel and folk tunes that were familiar to the local folks back then. The Smith Brothers were a gospel duet team. They did numerous personal appearances in the Southern region of the United States as well as recording for Capitol records.

They were at first with the group called the Sunshine Boys.

The Smith Brothers found themselves in Hollywood for a time. During their four years, mostly with the Columbia studio, they appeared in 17 films. They were said to especially be proud of their work with Charles Starrett in the "Durango Kid" series.

But television was coming onto the scene and the brothers wanted to see what it would offer them. They heard that WSB-TV was to become Atlanta and the south's first television station. In fact, it went on the air in September 1948. The Smith Brothers made a favorable impression with the station manager and program director and became the first musical act and thus, the first "live" television show in Atlanta.

Soon, Atlanta had a new station - WAGA-TV. Smitty and Tennessee put their heads together again and thought they could have a bigger and better show. Evidently they couldn't convince the folks at WSB-TV, so they switched to WAGA-TV. They went on the air with folks such as Boots Woodall, Paul Rice and announcer Jon Farmer, doing a 75-minute daily show called "TV Ranch". The show gained immediate popularity with the fans and in 1952, the folks who read Atlanta's "TV Digest" voted "TV Ranch" their favorite local music show.

Around this time, they recorded four sides for an independent record label. The records sold well and word got back to Ken Nelson of Capitol Records who convinced them to sign a recording contract with Capitol.

Their popularity continued to gain momentum in Atlanta. WAGA-TV gave them another daily show at 5:45pm which they did alone, singing their familiar duets and gospel melodies.

A 1954 article notes that the brothers were well qualified and talented enough to play Western swing and popular music, but their real interest was in the Gospel songs.

Carl Dobkins Jr. - Lucky Devil

It's crazy to think that it's been a year since we started posting tunes here @ the devil's music but it was last x-mas time that the devil got his mp3 turntable and was able to start posting music (vinyl only thank you). so with that in mind and with the holiday season winding down i'd like to give some thanks for my wonderful family & friends for what amounts to a pretty lucky life. It's not always easy and i can lose sight of the fact that i am indeed a lucky devil overall and i do realize it. So in honor of what i lucky devil i truly am, here is Mr. Carl Dobkins Jr. w/ Lucky Devil. This goes out to all my family & friends and mostly the JJB for putting up with me over the last year and then some....

Carl Dobkins Jr. was a purveyor of mild-mannered rock & roll similar to Johnny Tillotson or Ricky Nelson who managed four Billboard hits in 1959-60, the biggest of which was the Top Five "My Heart is an Open Book." His second-biggest hit, "Lucky Devil" (also recorded by Frank Ifield around the same time) peaked at number 25 is here for you now.

Here is the Dobkins low down:

Carl Dobkins Jr. is one of those rockabilly legends who won't quit, even decades after his last chart entry. From a number three hit in 1959 with "My Heart Is an Open Book," he maintained a decades-long career that delighted audiences for generations on both sides of the Atlantic. Dobkins was born into an Appalachian family that had transplanted themselves to Cincinnati in search of a better life. The family was filled with amateur musicians — both of his parents sang, and his mother played guitar — and at age nine Dobkins was given a ukulele by his parents. He quickly learned the instrument and moved on to the guitar, learning first the country and hillbilly songs that his family favored. While Dobkins was in high school, he started writing songs of his own and cut a demo record of two of them, which led to a meeting with disc jockey Gil Sheppard, who offered to manage Dobkins in a potential music career. Rock & roll was breaking nationally and Sheppard saw Carl Dobkins Jr. as a potential star. Thus, he became "the Teenage Rage," and began singing at local dance parties and record hops. Every record label was looking for the next Elvis Presley or Carl Perkins, and Dobkins was signed to the Cincinnati-based Fraternity Records, which released "Take Hold of My Hand" b/w "That's Why I'm Asking." It failed to chart, and he next moved to the much larger King Records for a recording session, but Sheppard sold the master to the still larger Decca Records label. Issued on Decca, "If You Don't Want My Lovin'" became a regional hit on its initial release, and did well enough to justify Decca investing more time in Dobkins. He cut his first sessions for Decca in Nashville under the aegis of Owen Bradley. The result was "My Heart Is an Open Book," Dobkins' lasting claim to immortality in the field of rockabilly. One of the better crossover records in the field, it rocked hard with a solid guitar sound and a great beat, and featured the artist backed by two of the Anita Kerr Singers. Ironically, the record took six months to take off, requiring two rounds of promotion by the label. When the smoke cleared, Dobkins was making appearances on national television behind "My Heart Is an Open Book," including Dick Clark's American Bandstand the day after his graduation from high school. He toured nationally and worked in six months of army reserve service in the infantry as well, as "My Heart Is an Open Book" soared to number three nationally in the spring of 1959, earning a gold record in its 24-week chart run. A follow-up, "Lucky Devil," reached number 25 in a 17-week run late in the year, and even "If You Don't Want My Lovin'" made it to number 67 when it was reissued nationally around the same time. Dobkins also got to number 62 the next spring with "Exclusively Yours." Carl Dobkins Jr. made all of the usual moves that a young rock & roller did in those days, going into more lyrical, romantic sounds as the public's taste for rock & roll seemed to retreat in the early '60s — by 1961, he was even cutting versions of movie themes, such as "Pretty Little Girl in the Yellow Dress" from the western The Last Sunset, starring Kirk Douglas and Rock Hudson. In all, he cut 18 singles and an LP, and remained active in the business for years, touring with Bobby Freeman, Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vee, Buddy Knox, Frankie Avalon, Jan & Dean, Frankie Ford, Freddie Cannon, and Jimmy Clanton, the Drifters, and the Crickets.

The Devil's Music Play Lists - Past 7 Months!!!

Ok, I started this little thing after being inspired by my man DJ prestige and although i know I could never even come close to the legend he is i figured "what the hell"

For anyone paying attention over here, we do a little radio show every Thursday night here in Jersey @ www/wlfr.fm/ from 6 to 10pm....

we play whatever we want and it's pretty eclectic. I been collecting records for over 20 years off and on...

so anyway here is a complete list of all the songs we have played over the last 7 months!

I highly doubt anyone will actually search this whole thing out but i can at least keep them safe up in this house!

oh yeah, our little myspace page is: www.myspace.com/foward_to_the_caves

hope to see ya 'round some time!
