Ilmo Smokehouse - Devil Take My Grandma

Short-lived outfit from 1971 but innovative prog band from Illinois with ex-Gonn members Gerry Gabel and Craig Moore. "We were heavy as hell, anti-war, pro-drug hippie all the way", remembers Moore. Without Gabel the group turned into Smokehouse, now presenting their progressive styles with glitter and make-up.

Formed in 1969 by the Tieken brothers from Quincy, Illinois. They'd previously been in the long-lived Freddy Tieken and The Rockers who'd been going at it since the late fifties. As The Gonn disintegrated in 1968, first Slink Rand and then Craig Moore joined 'The Rockers. Craig:- "Fred changed the name to The American Music Band, stealing it sort of from The Electric Flag. We played EVERYWHERE... Then when the horn guys all quit, we became Ilmo Smokehouse, heavy as hell, anti-war, pro-drug hippie all the way. When that eventually ended Slink, Dennis and I became 'Smokehouse' as a really heavy progressive trio. Later on we had Micki Free on guitar (later with L.A. soul group Shalamar). We wore glitter and make-up before Kiss, but they made it we didn't. It's all nuts, convoluted, insane, I can't believe I did all of this crap!"

Their album was recorded in Memphis at 'Beautiful Sound' Studio, owned by Dan Penn of Box Tops fame (as a songwriter producer). He engineered part of the session, with his partner Jim Johnson.

Extra nugget of useless info: Steve Gaines breifly played with the group before joining and then dying with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Fifth Order- A Thousand Devils Are Chasing Me

Some mid week light psych garage pop music for you with the fifth order from Columbus Ohio via 1967.

Their 1966 garage classic Goin' Too Far b/w Walkin' Away was a tremendous regional success, at the time becoming the biggest selling seven-incher from Columbus, Ohio. Their second local hit, A Thousand Devils (Are Chasing Me) b/w Today I Got A Letter, was picked up by Laurie for national release. These two records have long been recognized as sterling examples of Ohio's vibrant mid-60s garage rock scene. But the story of the Fifth Order has remained untold, until now...

If you dig the scene check the full story here:

Lotti Golden - A Lot Like Lucifer (Celia Said Long Time Loser)

From the Lotti Golden Motor-Cycle album released on Atlantic Records in 1969 and produced by Bob Crewe, which is a weird soulish psych album that i find intriguing.

Starts off mellow and kinda goes big band girl group with some psych moves and fuzz guitar.... strange little record and a strange little song.

There is not a lot of info out there at least that i could find so if you know this chicks deal drop the knowledge...

Dick Kent - Backin' Up The Devil

i got a few more devil posts if ya'll can handle it?

Gonna stick with the "country" vibe here by way of Hollywood? California and the M.S.R. label.

M.S.R. was one of those record labels where folks would send them their words or "songs",(along with about a few hundred bucks) these records are often called poem songs, and M.S.R. would then turn it into a song using their studio musicians and then send a box of this crap to the "writer" so he/she could bore his friends with it. Not unlike most bands do today...

Read more about the Song Poem Here:

So good old Dickie here or was it Perry H. Hopkins? paid good hard scratch to have his "poem" turned into this little dittie for your listening pleasure now!

Bobby Moline - Devil Get Behind Me

What we have here is a really great song by a man i know nothing about but when i saw that Park Ave label and Devil in the title i knew i had to be good and man was i right. There is some really great guitar playing in this tune and it sounds as if good old Mr. Moline is truly haunted and trying to make amends here. A search on the interwebs told me that this is from 1964 but not much else was to be had about Bobby.

You can buy a copy here: on ebay for $112.00 if you so desire or get it from the devils music for free!

Choice is yours....

Phantom's Devine Comedy - Devil's Child

Shortly after this lp was released Doors fans caused quite a stir claiming the mysterious lead singer of Phantom's Devine Comedy was none other than the fat bloated and drunk corpse come back to life of Jim Morrison...

Think The Doors with a much heavier sound and a more polished singer and you have Phantom's Divine Comedy Part 1. An album steeped in mystery due to the un-credited musicians and of course, Phantom himself. Yes, the similarities to Jim Morrison are uncanny. The lyrics are also Doors/Morrison territory. Released in 1974.

Either way this rather rare lp for a major label "Capitol" is a nice slice of Doors inspired psych rock even if it ain't the Lizard King...

Chuck Thompson and His Rock-A-Billies - Devil's Sweetheart

Here is a fairly rare mild rockabilly type country number on a rare label, Granite Records G560 out of Mt. Airy, NC from 1965.... blah blah blah... '65 seems late for this but whatever... i read that on the very acurate internet...

This one goes out to the devil's actual sweetheart; the one, the only, the angelic JJB.

Don't ask me how the devil wound up with an angel but i ain't complaining. (least not today) :)

Tommie Young - Everybody's Got A Little Devil In Their Soul

One time before his death i split a bottle of wine and a few joints with Carl Sagan and we got to talking about life and death and the universe and the existence of the actual devil and although Carl couldn't vouch for the actual existence he did explain that "Everybody's Got A Little Devil In Their Soul"...

I know this better than anyone...
