Sometimes i wonder why i like a certain thing and this is one of those cases. I make no apology for liking crappy music. i like A LOT of stupid shit. I have a wide pallet when it comes to music, but i do wonder sometimes.... This here crap falls somewhere between Asbury Park N.J. City Rock Ala Bruce Springsteen and South Side Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and at times some sorta Bluesy New Wave, but all from Australia which makes it even more strange. I still can't put my finger its appeal to me..... Elvis Costello thought so much of Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons' single "So Young" that he recorded a version himself. Not sure what that says about me liking this.... maybe i just like the album cover..... Yeah, i think that's it.

The Mods - Ritual - Everybody Needs Somebody

Ok, Here is a few choice New Jersey cuts, via the Asbury Park area.

I had heard that these guys were from my neck of the woods from Mr. Brimstone over at Blues for the Red Boy and a few weeks ago when i was out and about with some friends and Mr. Funky 16 Corners & Iron Leg Master blogger Larry Grogan dropped the knowledge on me again I really had no idea that the 45 was even that rare, but after talking about the Asbury music scene of years gone bye with Larry and DJ Pres and The Mods came up I knew I had this 45 tucked away somewhere so i dug it out and now i give it to you!

A sharp 6-piece group from Rumson and Seabright, NJ, the Mods often performed in Asbury Park and at Le Teen de Vous in Middletown, with competition like the Castiles (one of Springsteen's first bands) and the Inmates. The original band members were Rich Lillie on vocals and his brother Bob Lillie on guitar, Phil Watson lead guitar, Wally Hageman guitar, Bob Busch on bass and Bruce Cunningham on drums.

The band released two 45s on the Al Mott's Revelation VII label, the first a promotion for a local Ford dealer, Go Steinbach's Mustang, with a crude cover of Satisfaction on the flip.

Their second record has their greatest recorded moment, the fantastic Ritual. It's known as having some of the most misogynistic lyrics of any garage song (and that's saying alot!), but there's no denying the power of the opening riff when the bass and drums kick in. The double-tracked vocals are also unusual. This release has a good cover of Everybody Needs Somebody on the b-side.

Ritual appears a second time on the Mod label as the b-side to a song based on the TV show Candid Camera. This was a tie-in to the band's appearance on the show (check it out here). The show aired in November of 1966 and led to offers to tour, but by that time the members were attending college. The Mods played occasional shows for years afterwards with changing personnel, but never again strived for national attention.

Asbury Park

I was in Asbury Park last night for the Butthole Surfers show at the Asbury Lanes.

Now i know this is a "music" blog but Asbury is a town i used to run in pretty heavy. Living right next door in "The Grove", Ocean Grove that is...

I went a bit early and met some friends for some pre show drinks and it had been the 1st time i have actually been out and about in the day time in a long time so I took some time to check out the town and man has A.P. really changed a bunch in the last few years.

anyone who knows AP will know what I'm talking about (unless your one of the money hungry assholes making it an unaffordable place to live anymore) and those who don't won't give a shit.

Now i didn't leave this town on my own but had to go out of some very unfortunate circumstances. And there seems to be a lot of that going around lately but the day i left was not a happy one so before i left with a very heavy heart i took my shitty digital camera and walked the grove and up and around the boards of Asbury because i know i wasn't going to be hanging around my old haunts anymore.

I had a lot of good times up and around that area when i lived with my one time lady friend and Mother of my Children, and for a short while another one i once called my brother who has been MIA for a while now with his own "life" problems.

I lived within walking distance of a bunch of great bars that are almost all gone and few cool clubs that some are still around but i hardly ever hear of many great shows anymore, but hell, even if i did i live far enough away now that i almost never take the drive. Last night was the exception.

Anyway, I was feeling nostalgic for a time and place that no longer exists and couldn’t believe how much things have changed, not only in Asbury Park but in my life as well. So on that day I left I took these crappy pictures and I’m gonna share them with you now.

Not exactly a paradise but I called it home….

Broken turntables, playlist, found keys & some news!

OK, so we did the Forward to the Caves radio show last night only after being informed that both turntables were up and running, so I grabbed 2 45 boxes with great anticipation of spinning a bunch of Funky Soul and following it up some some killer Garage & Psych but after only a few tunes realized that the right channel was not working on turntable 2... what a bummer.

So our game plan was screwed up because we had to fall back on some CD's and change the whole direction of the show and went with a heavier 70's style psych sound. I did manage to get in a plug for DJ Prestige's groovy show he has coming up, here is the info lifted from his site:

The Budos Band will be playing live at the World Famous Asbury Lanes on Friday December 21st. It will be a full band gig (13 members), who will bring their brand of Afro Soul from the streets of Shaolin, (that’s Staten Island) to Asbury Park. DJ Prestige and Larry from Funky 16 Corners will be manning the decks in between sets, spinning Raw and Funky Soul all night. There may be a guest selector or two as well, so you’ll have to drop by the Lanes that night to check it out. The night will be called The 4th and Kingsley Soul Club, and will kick off a series of nights at the Lanes who focus on Funk and Soul bands.

Sounds pretty sweet, so if you in that neck of the woods you should attend & support,
as DJ Pres is seriously kicking this little funk & soul scene in the ass and making some head way! Plus he's a pretty ace dude outside of being an amazing DJ. After watching his set at the last 45 session my dick shriveled up between my legs and my jaw hit the floor. simply killer!

Asbury Park 45 Session Play List, Tech problems, good times & lost keys...

whoa!

My head is still spinning a bit from last nights jam session as i sip some luke warm coffee and try to put the events that took place into some form of order.

Man, it was a whole lotta fun and there was some serious music spun. I can't wait to see play lists from everyone so I can start finding some of the wicked shit that was played!

Yours truly got off to a shaky start due some technical problems and in some part i'm sure my utter stupidity but alas all was rectified and the fuzz & funk was put forth!

i also lost my keys last night which didn't make for a fun time trying to get in the house at 3AM without them so if anyone finds a set of keys PLEASE let me know!

I'm still a bit out of it considering MANY Guinness were drank last night and i very rarely see 3AM anymore being a working man and all so I'm not going to get too detailed since details are a bit "fuzzy" but everyone killed it and i had a wicked good time!

I aint got much else. Just got back from a LONG weekend in Boston recording withh my band and I'm feeling pretty beat up but way looking forward to spinning some deep funk grooves with some fuzzy overtones this Friday. come the Funk Down!
