The Moods - King Hustler - Hustlin

Great Funky Soul right here! I played King Hustler at my 1st 45 session way back when and have been sitting on it a long long while. Seems like a great time to drop it! From what i can find out these guys were a Philly band that evolved out of the group called "The Volcanos" - The Volcanos recorded several 45's for the Arctic label and later a 45 for the Harthon label. Sometime around 1968, Gene Jones left the group, re-christened himself Gene Faith and started recording for Philadelphia’s Virtue records. The rest of the group reformed as the Moods and recorded at least one 45 for Wand, ‘Rainmaker’ b/w ‘Lady Rain’. Then there is this 45 on Reddog ‘Hustlin’ b/w ‘King Hustler’

Ok here is where I need some help.

There seems to be some kind of a foul up on my copy of this 45 as i have heard the flip "Hustlin" on the web elsewhere and it is just the song King Hustler without the vocals. My Flip says Hustlin on the label but the song is singing about Holding An Aution On Love and has nothing to do with "Hustlin"... WTF? Can anyone confirm what this song is and is it even the same group?

I have a copy of this 45 but mine has the instrumental version of King Hustler on the b-side. There is a youtube video that says it is Hustlin' but instead it is Option On Love (? not sure on the title) like you described. Weird.

I'd love to know which version of the 45 is the more scarce one.

Weird. Makes me wonder why the two versions exist.

Hi there,
I'm a bit late on the uptake here but are you referring to AUCTION ON LOVE by JAMES BOUNTY? It's evident that it's not the same person but the two records are both produced by John Madara & arranged by Tom Sellers....possible link to why they're flips on the same 45?

While King Hustler is the Moods and Auction on Love is James Bounty, these two songs were cut on the same session. I have the 16 track multitrack tape in our Archives (Drexel Audio Archives) with these two songs on it. The tape is simply labeled The Moods. Additionally, a year earlier, The Moods cut King Hustler and With A Woman, which were the A and B sides of a 45. Different version of King Hustler altogether. Not sure the back story on this, but all of these tracks are fantastic
