Frozen Sun - Electric Soul (Long Version)

I've been in contact with the producer of this rare Hendrix inspired 45. See below:

I am the Producer of the recording. These few records left are from my personal collection. May be only a couple dozen left in the world... and you have one! I was a "star" top-40 DJ back in the late 1960s. I produce many concerts and "Battle of the Bands" events in Tucson, Arizona. I met rhythm guitarist/singer Sid Dawson at the Univ.of Arizona. I then featured the Frozen Sun in a number of these concerts. They began to have a following, so I then produced their records. Lead guitar / Singer Ron Ryan was an amazing Jimi Hendrix style player... drummer Lee Balin and bass player Hector Carrillo. The first record was "Got To Get Away", followed by this record "Electric Soul", which climbed to the top ten in southern Arizona in 1969.

KTKT' DJ Frank Casanova was a local icon in the late '60s, hosting his regular slot as well as his late night "Threshold" show, also on KTKT, which featured the heavier "underground/acid rock" sounds of the day. Frank also managed bands, produced live events, and started a record label; Capt. Zoomar Records, named after a character on the legendary Phoenix TV program The Wallace and Ladmo Show. Frank's label released three records, two by Frozen Sun and one by KTKT's Johnny Rabbit (Lee Poole) who did his show in an impressive Wolfman Jack voice, during the time the Wolfman was at the Tijuana/Hollywood powerhouse, XERB. "Electric Soul" is the second Frozen Sun release on the label, released in '69, pairing an edited and long version of the Hendrix inspired track; the long version including an extended guitar workout and a drum solo. Lee Furr, the founder of his own well-known local studio a few years later, recorded this track at Arizona Recorders with Frank Casanova as the producer. Band members were rhythm guitarist Sid Dawson, lead guitarist (with big Hendrix hair) Ron Ryan, bassist Hector Carrillo and drummer Lee Balin. Lee Joseph grew up in Tucson. He's a DJ (Luxuriamusic.com), marketer of cool shit (Reverberations Media) and founder/CEO of internationally respected Dionysus Records, an indie that has long specialized in releasing super-rare music, and more. Pretty good hard rock that borders on bonehead cruncher and glam-ish rock. Sort of sounds a tiny bit like Rose Tattoo. Much better than their 2nd single.

Released in 1974, this is the ultra-rare, white label Promotional Only 7", 45rpm EP by the Tampa, FL trio of 20-year-old power poppers, Amnesia "Ahh..." (3:40) This is Earshot Records TC-1128 The songs were recorded at Bee Jay Recording Studios in Winter Park, FL, and engineered by Bill Vermillion.

Released out of Winter Park, Florida.

The year is 1965 & i love the main singer dudes almost crackly voice. Cool 45 i was happy to find on the cheap.

Great 4 song EP of rare early R&B tunes. I'm pretty sure these tunes were only originally available of 78's and then this EP was bootlegged sometime in the 50's or early 60's to share the wealth. Maybe if he is still around THE HOUND can shed some light on this subject?

What little i know about each performer is this: Sticks McGee or Stick McGhee was younger brother of Brownie McGhee. Mel Walker was born Melvin Lightsey in 1929. Walker was jailed on narcotics charges in the early 1950s and is reported to have died young. The Blenders I think were a west coast group that somehow had ties to groups like the Jacks and Cadets...? Or Am i Just making this up? & the most famous of the 4 Wynonie Harris, Born 24 August 1915, Omaha, Nebraska, USA. Died: 14 June 1969, Los Angeles, USA.

American rhythm & blues vocalist with a hot-n'-raunchy rock and roll style and dance skills. Harris really began his career touring with Lucky Millinder's band, eventually cutting his first recording with them in May 1944. After quitting the band he signed up to Leo & Edward Mesner's "Philo" label in the spring of 1945, with Johnny Otis leading his line-up.

He recorded on further labels, gaining popular success on the King label in the late '40s. By the mid '60s he was recording on Chess and performing with artists such as T-Bone Walker and Big Mama Thornton.

Harris died of throat-cancer, aged 53. His work has subsequently been honored by inductions into several 'Halls of Fame', including the Blues Hall of Fame, Memphis, Tennessee.

Mega funky shit right here! Wow, i've had this 45 for years and never even looked it up, but i just found out that this is appreantly one of the rarest and sought after funk 45's out there! haha! Nice! I always dug this and even played this out at one of the 45 sessions one night in Asbury Park but really had no idea until now while trying to look up info on it that this was that rare. Seeing as this is from Jersey and i am from NJ this just fell in my lap and i never thought much about the value because i'm not into records for money. i'm into records for the music, so no, this is not for sale...

This is THE baddest 45 i have ever heard, the grittiest Funk ever put on record, this is in the top 10 of the most sought after, rarest Funk 45's ever made, the last one to sell last year sold for $2350.

Ok, a little help here. I could not find anything and i mean anything out about this records. I can't find anything about Mr. Jim Orange on a green record. I couldn't even find out anything about "Golly Records". The only Gaylarks i could find are from mid/late 50's and this doesn't sound that old and none of their songs are the same as this or on Golly records. As for Myron Smith on piano.... well, there is a bunch of them out there and none seemed to match. And nothing on L. Thompson & W. Gollender.... Anyone know anything about this "unknown" soul cut?

Teddy Cris and the Cristones - I'm A Hero In My Home Town

I found this record in a pile of junk many years ago right here in Jersey and seeing as it is from Hazlet (New Start Records Hazlet N.J.)this makes sense. But i know nothing about this little gem here even though it and myself are from the same area. I would imagine this was self released w/ Mr. Cris leading the way right out of Hazlet. I would also imagine this is a pretty rare little fucker. i googled this in multiple ways and found NOTHING! Either way this is a real great rockabilly type number about being a big fish in small pond only to make a move and then being the little fish in a big pond. There is some really great guitar work on this cut and i dig the sort of laid back vocal delivery. This has a real late 50's (58) rockabilly vibe but for some reason, being as its coming out of Jersey i would suspect this may very well be early 60's...?

This is the reason i collect records and why i do what i do and get my ass up at 6AM on my weekends and go dig for vinyl, almost always coming away with nothing spacial but once in a while digging up a real winner.

I don't ask for much while i do this shitty little blog but if you do in fact know anything about this record or Mr. Cris please let me know. Until then, enjoy!

Alpha Wave is a bit more modern and trippy sounding, not unlike something you might hear on a Billy Cobham record... while Easy Livin' goes a little more towards traditional funkiness, it still has a bit more modern vibe. Either way pretty cool tunes and a record you don't see everyday.

The Beast - Power Metal EP - Mutha 006 - 1983

OK Folks, gonn stick with punky side of things here and give you another rare New Jersey gem from 1983 on the Mutha label.

I think this is a very under rated Mutha release but i guess because its labeled "Metal" some folks don't want to give it props but besides the shredding guitar playing of "The Hinge" and some of the content of the lyrics this definitely has a punk quality to it.

The guitar playing is top notch by Jack "The Hinge" Pitzer who reminds me a lot of Jack Endino in the Skin Yard days. The Hinge was a long time sound guy at the Legendary Brighton Bar, Long Branch, NJ, where The Beast has played numerous times back in the day and then he went on the play with Greg Gory of the famed Chronic Sick in the band The X-Men with members of NJ Psych greats Secret Syde and Laughing Soup Dish, but that's all a different story entirely...

The Beast Consisted of Scott Ruth (vocals), Jack "The Hinge" Pitzer (guitar), Ronnie Ace (guitar), Jeff Grass (bass), Doug Ryan (drums) - This group emerged from the band TYRANT, which included Mark Mutha. Members of the band were also went on to RIPPING CORPSE, another great NJ thrash metal band.

I've been trying to hunt down and complete my Mutha record collection since back in the day and being from the eara i've been lucky but I'm missing a bunch but i do have a large quantity so stay tuned and I'm sure I'll get to more in the very near future. I think a posting of "The Worst" Expect the Worst might be in order next!

Sometime in 1977, THE WORST and SCHRAPNEL tore a hole in the "Springsteen" picture that had represented the Jersey Shore music scene (or "SOAP" - Sounds Of Asbury Park), and so began NJ's premier, strongest, and probably longest lasting Hardcore Punk scene.
In 1978, Mark "Mutha" Chesley was playing in a HM band called TYRANT. He left that band to become manager for The Worst, and soon began hosting Mutha Record Nights at his home in Long Branch, where he would play records by hard and heavy bands like The Stooges, MC5, Blue Cheer, as well as obscure psychedelic bands from the Sixties, and the latest offerings from British and American Punk bands. Under Mutha's watchful eye. Jersey Shore Hardcore bands began to take shape. THE WORST, THE BURNT, CHILD ABUSE, and FATAL RAGE were among the first bands to emerge from this new Mutha-land.
The Fast Lane in Asbury Park (where local bands could open for national acts like The Dictators, Black Flag, etc..) as well as The Hot-Dog House (a rented loft in Asbury) were host to many of the early shows that Mark and the local musicians helped organize. Soon, The Brighton Bar in West Long Branch became home for this growing scene, and remains active to this day. The turning point for the Hardcore scene occured when Mutha Records was established in 1982 - simply for the love of music and to prevent good bands from becoming just a memory. The first release was a 7" EP by THE WORST, followed shortly by releases by CHRONIC SICK, and PUBLIC DISTURBANCE. But Mutha Records was not restricted to Jersey Shore bands, as other bands in the NJ/NY area soon filled Mark's growing catalog. "I'm for the underdog...and the underground" stated Mark, and with his help, music by the bands listed on this page will be around forever - as it should be.

The Devil's Music - Devil Dick Mix - At the Montains of Madness Psych Mix Vol. 3, Pt. 2

When I found out DJ Pres was doing this guest DJ mix thing I thought I’d put together a killer Fuzzy and Funky mix for him but when I talked to him on the phone he was all about getting some Psychedelic jams together…. I was more than happy to oblige.

It was pretty tough picking out the tunes in this mix because I could have gone on for days and days without stopping but I wanted to keep it brief and to the point and then I thought shit man, I have so many tunes I want to use why not do a sister mix!?! So I did!

I put together not 1 but 2 great sampling’s of late 60’s & early 70’s psychedelic music with some wicked fuzzy guitar tones mixed throughout, lot’s of killer organ work, some smooth but pumping bass lines and last but not least some trippy vocals and lyrics. Keep your dancing shoes under your bed for this one but bust out that bean bag chair from the attic and dust of your lava lamp, plug in you “Black Light”, break out your “sack” & burn, burn, burn!!!

Morgen - Welcome to the Void: "ABC Record's valiant attempt at the 'hip/youth' market, Probe, released many memorable LP's by such groups as Saint Steven and The Litter along with debut offerings by Zephyr, Soft Machine and Rare Bird, but none generate the frenzy at this late date quite like the quartet led by guitarist/vocalist Steve Morgen, first unleashed in 1969. Even before dropping needle on groove, the stark black-and-white sleeve with inset Edvard Munch lithograph, in contrast to the multicoloured hues so prevalent then, makes an immediate statement. And then the music makes another immediate statement... A foreboding bass riff and staccato drumming introduce 'Welcome To The Void', and for the next thirty-eight minutes one is hurled headlong into a vortex of dual-guitar overload, lyrically woven with romantic and Victorian imagery residing on a tab of microdot. Radio stations didn't bite on the single, Probe closed up shop, and the world became a decidedly sadder place."

Saint Steven - Gladcadova: Saint Steven is actually Steve Cataldo, who had previously been the guitarist and singer/songwriter for the minor late-'60s Boston psychedelic band Front Page Review. His 1969 album, also called Saint Steven, was similarly period psychedelia, w/ some Pop/rock and folk-rock sensibilities were sprinkled with bits of odd sound effects (animal roars, 1968 Republican Convention soundbites, etc.)

Eden's Children - Sure Looks Real: From Boston The Children were a three piece group. Larry Kiley the bass player and Jimmy Sturman the drummer were a constantly interesting rhythm section. The main songwriter/singer was Richard 'Sham' Schamach who was also a great guitar player. This cut from the 2nd album is from 1969. "Sure Looks Real" is nice Smooth vocal Pop that leads into an Awesome solo FUZZ ATTACK!

Lemon Pipers - I Was Not Born To Follow: The Lemon Pipers included singer Ivan Browne, guitarist William Bartlett, keyboardist R.G. Nave, bassist Steve Walmsley, and drummer William Albaugh. The group is best known for their number-one bubblegum hit "Green Tambourine" and several followups, all written by the team of Paul Leka and Shelley Pinz. The group actually wanted to play more psychedelic music; they only recorded "Green Tambourine" because their label would have dropped them had they refused. These guys get overlooked because of their "hit".

C.A. Quintet - Cold Spider: A major rarity and a major freak out record, C.A. Quintet's "Trip Thru Hell" is a spooky, murky, macabre vision. Genuinely original and chilling expeacially considering it's release date of 1968.

Fever Tree - The Man Who Paints the Pictures: Texas psych from 1968, the self-titled debut album of this unfairly neglected psychedelic band is an odd mix of slick studio work laced with surprising moments of eclecticism, from soundtrack references to hard rock worthy of the best bands of the time.

Things to Come - Dancer: Emerging from the glut of Southern Californian rock groups in the mid-'60s, Things to Come formed in 1966. Their original lineup included lead singer Steve Runolfsson, drummer Russ Kunkel (who would go on to become a top sessionman), and bassist Bryan Garofalo (also a future sessionman and a member of Glenn Frey's band since 1982). The group cut only three singles in their brief lifetime. This cut is from a 60's comp called "Speed Kills" which was made and sold to benefit "drug abusers".... heh...

Art - I Think I'm Going Weird: Classic but little known 60's Brit psych band that would later evolve into the much more know band "Spooky Tooth" released in 1967 this a "real" psychedelic record that is vamped in echo, swirling guitars, strong vocal melodies, heavy guitar riffing and great use of effects. Early & Classic indeed...!

H.P. Lovecraft - Mobin's Trip / At the Mountains of Madness: Featuring two strong singers (who often sang dual leads), hauntingly hazy arrangements, and imaginative songwriting that drew from pop and folk influences, H.P. Lovecraft was one of the better psychedelic groups of the late '60s. The band was formed by ex-folky George Edwards in Chicago in 1967. Edwards and keyboardist Dave Michaels, a classically trained singer with a four-octave range, handled the vocals, which echoed Jefferson Airplane's in their depth and blend of high and low parts. I had to end with "At the Mountains of Madness" since this is the "sister" mix to the Flea market Funk mix that ends w/ a song of the same title...

The Gents - I Wonder Why

Hell if i could find anything out about these guys. Everytime i googled them in any variation of band name, song title and or normandy records i got nothing much.

It looks like they had another track "Honor Bright" comped on The Essential Pebbles Collection, Vol. 3: European Garage, but then i found a record store selling this Normandy 45 and saying they were from the USA? So 2 different Gents?

The only other thing i found was this cool billboard ad from 1967 for this single so i know its from '67 but there was no real info along with the ad either.

But anyway what we have here is a killer 60's psychedelic garage punk stomper with crazy distorted and heavy guitar and totally effected over-amped vox. really a killer cut.
Looks like it was comped on an Austrailian garage comp in the late 90's called "Destination Frantic" but still no info! HELP!?!???
