Groovy little uptempo garage/pop/psych nugget with nice fuzzy guitars and a smattering of heavy organ throughout.

Formed in Milwaukee in 1968 at Cudahy's Galaxy Club where the Kondos brothers joined up with members of an outfit called Eastern Mean Time. Some months later they were heard by Capitol reps at another club The Bastille, which the band had bought into.

With a contract for an album the band journeyed to Detroit to record at Terra Shirma studios with producer John Rhys. Released in February 1969, the LP is notable for the side-long psychedelic rework of John Coltrane's India. All tracks on side one were group compositions. It was successful in several regions (No. 3 in Milwaukee) but only rose to No. 197 in the national charts.

The group made more recordings but a deal for a second Capitol album fell through and this material was eventually spread across two LPs released by the band on Age Of Aquarius, a Cuca custom label (Fuzz, Acid & Flowers).

I never heard of the "Orange Alabaster Mushroom" before last week. I stumbled upon it in my endless search for music via the interwebs. I liked what i heard, found a copy of this 7 inch and jumped on it. Here is what the inter webs say about the "group":

Ontario's answer to the Bevis Frond, the Orange Alabaster Mushroom is bedroom D.I.Y. auteur Greg Watson, whose one-man band reproductions of classic circa-1967 psych-pop are so dead-on perfect in every detail that one could play this collection of 1991-1998 recordings for any fan of Nuggets-era obscurities and they'd think it was authentic circa 1967 psych-pop.

A few weeks ago I posted a 45 by Snow here: This is an album cut from the self titled album on E pic records from 1968. This is a pretty heavy, dare i say doom-ish track for 1968. Maybe proto-doom? I mean Black Sabbath is a few years away and I can't think go too many bands that were playing this slow and doom like. Maybe Iron Butterfly or Blue Cheer, but at any rate this is a cool heavy track on an otherwise fairly light affair, that only hints at psych rock here and there, mostly playing the pop angle.

A little pop psych nugget from 1968 by Snow. Sounds like these guys must have heard "Sgt. Peppers" and "Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn" smoked some weed and took it from there. There's a cool little fuzzy guitar riff sort of hidden in the back that i wish was blazing instead of hiding, but i hear it.

Chill unknown hippie vibes from 1972 on the Susquehanna label by The 13th Floor. The A side sounds a bit more like a mid 60's pop garage tune than 1972 to my ears. Side B is more moody with mellow organ vibes that picks up 1/2 way through with a groovy bass line and then a nice little guitar solo. Going great with hot coffee and pouring rain outside my back door. Dig it.
