Here is an odd little peice.

Dion of Dion and the Belmonts fame doing a little breezy psychedelic version of Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze.

After the break up of the Belmonts in 1968 and Dion moving to Florida to kick his herion addiction he recorded the "Abraham, Martin, and John," a #4 hit ballad tribute to Lincoln, King, and Kennedy. The follow-up, a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" was a flop.

Messiah - Alpha Wave - Easy Livin'

Keeping w/ the Funk, here are 2 kill tracks from Messiah. Alpha Wave is a bit more modern and trippy sounding, not unlike something you might hear on a Billy Cobham record... while Easy Livin' goes a little more towards traditional funkiness, it still has a bit more modern vibe. Either way pretty cool tunes and a record you don't see everyday.

Zip-Codes - Sweet Meat Part 1

Alright peeps, switching gears here with something funky from the Zip-Codes on Better records that will have to hold you over for the next week or so because I'm taking me and my sunny disposition on the road and out to Texas for SXSW (South By South West), where yours truly and my band Solace will be playing Friday the 20th @ the Room 710 in Austin.

A quick search of the interwebs came up goose eggs on the zip-codes except that a few peeps are selling this thing, but I'm shouting this out to my man DJ Prestige because i was planning on spinning this at the last 45 session but the Guinness got in the way so maybe next time!

The Life - Snake Bite

This was originally posted on 8/26/08 but I'm re-posting this little number because i had a very cool comment left and because this post is so old would most likely would not be seen by many, but one of the members of "The Life' left a very informative comment. So while maybe i'll bitch about no one leaving comments (see previous post) events like this make it worth my while, knowing that members of long forgotten bands are out there and approve of the devil trying to keep their memory alive is very cool. So please if you didn't check this tune out the first time around please do so now and leave some more comments!!!

I couldn't find anything about this kooky little garage number here except that it is from 1967 or 1968? But that might not even be correct because this sounds earlier unless these guys were just stuck in time.... Every time i searched all i came up with was "records" of people losing their life from snakebite! And not the good kind of records but those lame ass ones cops put in folders and then box up and go on your permanent RECORD...

So enjoy this little odd garage type number on HI records and recorded in Memphis in 1967? and written by Walt Stewart.

Great to come across "Snakebite" on your blog. Here's a bit more info about "The Life". We recorded this in about '67, along with about five other songs by Walt. "Snakebite" was a "pick-hit" in a handful of cities in the South, but faded from play in a few months. "The Life" was the recording name for our group, otherwise known as the "Hungry I". We were a seven piece (keyboard, bass, 2 guitars, 2 trumpets & drums) group that did a lot of traveling across the south in the late 60's, based in Auburn, AL, where most of us were students at the university. Walt Stewart was lead singer & guitarist, and did a good bit of song writing. Marvin Taylor was lead guitarist, Stacy Goss and Mike Stough-trumpets & vocals, Bill Stubblefield on keyboards & vocals, Ed (Sunshine) Roberts on drums & vocals and Bill Baggett (me) on bass.
Can't recall how the opportunity to record in Memphis came about, but we were all pretty hyped about finally getting what we considered to be, our share of sunlight. Although the group was a good combination of talent and personalities, we finally split up after a couple of years and everyone went in different directions. A web search today indicates that most have stayed in music and have done very well for themselves, although a couple of us eventually headed in a different professional direction. The visual arts turned out to be my calling.
I've got a great photo of the group that was a publicity shot made around the time of the recording, but don't know how to enter it on the blog.
Keep up the good work. I appreciate your ear for the choices you consistently shed a bit of light on.

a few years ago i was selling 45's for "the old man" on ebay and this was one on the better ones i sold for him. I personally don't sell anything. I am a troo))) collector so when i sold this great 45 i knew someday i had to find my own copy. It took me a while but i tracked one down not too long ago and here it is for anyones cares that wants to hear a really nice and tight and funky soul 45 of the highest caliber. I certainly don't claim to be a soul expert but i know what i like and i like this!

i did a search on the interwebs for little archie but mostly came up with this; so i can't paint an accurate description of mr. little (not that anyone cares) but i have a feeling that despite being "little" and a carpet, he probably got laid a lot more than any of us...

The Raw Meat - Funky Humpback - Run For Your Life

The Raw Meat, a band that fused jazz with rock and had Jimmy Mack on guitar as a member. The Raw Meat played for an extended period at the Cheetah at 310 West Fifty-second Street in New York City and released this 45 titled "Funky Hump Back" on the Musicor label.

Unfortunately, the band broke up weeks before a promised appearance on The Ed Sullivan show so they never achieved what Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago accomplished with the same sound.

Ok, after the success of my last beer song post about Pabst Blue Ribbon here is another beer related little diddy. I'm not even sure they still make Utica Club anymore? But i drank a few when i was a young lad.

I just did a search and yep, it's still being made: here's the low down.

Utica Club is a brand of naturally-aged pilsner beer from Utica, New York. Since 1888, Utica Club has been brewed at the West End Brewing Company (today the Matt Brewing Company). It was the first beer officially sold after Prohibition.

Utica Club's most famous campaign icons were a pair of talking beer steins, Schultz and Dooley, who appeared in several popular television commercials that ran from 1959 to 1964. DDB (Doyle Dane Bernbach) copywriter David Reider created the characters and comedian Jonathan Winters supplied the voices of Schultz, Dooley, and the other beer steins that appeared in the commercials. Many Utica Club commercials depicted two characters ending the argument abruptly on ordering a Utica Club beer, leading to the jingle "It's tough to argue over a Utica Club, 'cause they put too much love into it!"



Today, Utica Club is still being manufactured, although it is a minor brand in comparison to the brewery's primary line of Saranac beers. It is, however, still a favorite among residents of the Utica area.

Some affectionately refer to Utica Club as "Uncle Charlie." Accordingly, Utica Club Light (UCL) has been referred to as "Uncle Charlie Lewis."

Anywho, back to the tunes. A nice light 60's style pop psych tune with loads of groovy organ and a cool break with delayed vox singing of course about one of my fave subjects, BEER! Written and produced by a one Sasha Burland, who had his hand in the making of the Nutty Squirrels albums.
The flip is the same tune w/ some funky horns instead of vocals that almost makes the tune a jazzy soul jam. From looking around the web i guess this originally came with a picture sleeve but i found mine sans sleeve.

Enjoy a nice tall cool one (or 2 or 6) on this fine labor day!

Here is another one that i wrote about long before i could even post music here at the devil's music. See i had a run in with a certian record seller at one of the flea markets near my house with this record and it got away from me at that time: You can read about it Here: if you so desire, where after telling my tale of woe of not getting the 45 at that time i was lucky enough to have the sax player from the band, one Mr. Carl Williams leave some comments and tell a tale of playing out live and right in the middle of a sax break his sax actually broke!

Well it seems now Mr. Williams is a pretty big wig in the military! Pretty cool stuff. I mean i'm just a little old record collecting geek who posts some long lost 45's and I've had comments left by a bunch of guys that recorded some of these cool tunes. If you read any of the comments along the way you can see which band members left some.

Any way after NOT getting this 45 originally i searched and searched and searched, and it has taken me almost a year to track this little lost funk nugget down but i did! and now i give it to you!

Were running at half speed over here @ the devils music so please excuse our late entry into Vinyl record Day since our computer crashed we didn't even know if we would get a post in but I'd like to give a few shout outs & thanks and maybe fill you in on some of the devils vinyl madness!!!

1st many thanks to Todd Lucas over at It's Great Shakes for hipping me to "The Hits Just keep On Comin'" and this Vinyl Record Day Madness and for his and his partners great blog. And more importantly my main man DJ Prestige Flea Market Funk for alerting me to the record blogging universe and for his fine expose' over at his spot about another person i need to say thanks too, "The Old Man", who i have bought PLENTY of records from through the years and I am sure i have helped him buy many a case of Busch Beer as well!

Even though I've been collecting records now for well over 20 years I never really knew anyone who "collected" records. I of course had the casual collector friends who had a few records but none i would call true collectors. Even as a teenager when i was thriving on punk, hardcore and metal I would get shit from my friends for keeping my Pink Floyd albums and all that "Hippy" music. Hence I have always and will always collect music of ALL varieties. If you take a look around my little blogging corner you will not find music of any one particular variety, but many.

Anyway back to my little story: I knew no "real" record collectors until I met the JJB & co-worker and vinyl freak Deacon Brimstone and now DJ Prestige among others. At any rate it was a relief to know i was NOT ALONE in my endeavor to search out and find anything new and exciting and by "new" it almost always means something really "old".... Those in the know will know what i mean!

My mother probably had close to 100 records when i was a kid a HUGE amount and i'd spent a lot of time pulling through her collection, (most was crap) but she had a few that were real turn ons. (Janis Joplin's "Pearl" being one) And then at some point in my very young life my Uncle Dan came to live with us. He was a wild man with a huge Afro and wore "Manlets". This was back in the 70's. And i would spend a lot of time is his attic room staring at his crazy blacklight posters and digging through his stacks of vinyl. This is where i first heard Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix and an assortment of 60's psych and heavy 70's rock. It was an instant love affair and it even helped shape me as a musician and person I'm sure. After hearing what kind of HEAVY sounds the guitar could make, I wanted in and i wanted in NOW!!! And the quest was on. He would stand over me while i ordered records from the "Columbia House" catalog. You know, 10 for 1 penny and you only have to buy 3 more at full price over the next year!!! I was down with Kiss but he told me to buy Led Zeppelin.... Heh...

I've been very lucky over the years scoring some rare and not so rare but great sounding records. To me it's not how valuable a record is but the sounds in the groove. So for all the people above you have helped shape me as a music geek and those who continue to do so this is a big thank you! There are many who have come and gone through the years and too few time to mention them all but because of each one (including many a past girlfriend) I have amassed around 10,000 records... Maybe not as Huge a collection as many out there but on my limited budget i am very happy with my collection!!! So thanks! And keep on diggin'!!!

Switching things up yet again, I give you some serious & heavy "krautrock" from The Dischas.

I couldn't just post 1 side I had to do both because i dig these eaqually.

There is not much I could dig up on these guys but I do know that this 45 is from 1969 and that they changed their name to "Dschinn" after this was released and cut a Heavy Psych monster of an album under that name in 1972. And "Let's Go Together" from this 45 was re-cut and put on that Dschinn full length.

If anyone has any more info feel free to drop it!

The Rocking Ghosts - Ghost Walk

Ok, I'm going to switch things up here before the new year with some cool & smooth instrumental surf sounds from the early/mid 60's.

The Rocking Ghosts as far as i can tell were a fairly popular Danish group that actually charted in Denmark with the A side to this single Belinda. They released records in a lot of countries, Germany , Japan, U.S.A., Mexico, etc. Originally started as a school band early 1962 witha trumpet as leading instrument! But changed style and instruments in the middle of the same year. They were heavily inspired by Cliff Richards & The Shadows, so naturally the first recordings were instrumentals.
In 1967 they tried to chance their image to the new flower powerstyle. But the change didn't give them any new fans and they lost a lot of the older fans and the group decided to split up.

Here is a little something to either keep your spirits "HIGH" or to help pick you up from the post x-mas blues!

In keeping with my “Fuzzy” “Buzzy” & “Wasted” guitar theme, I give you a 45 I picked up not too long ago by the “Yellow Payges”.

I totally dig the crazy driving Wha Wha drenched vibe of this cut. It smokes!!!
The message is on point as well: Equality driven home via the Wha Wha pedal and thumping bass!

This cut is from 1969 and it shows. Total Garage Freak-out on the verge of heavy 70’s dinosaur rock, a little more polished that the typical Garage stomper of the mid 60’s but it never loses any of the the drive & vibe of that style.

There is a shit ton of stuff written about these guys and there is no way I could write anything as compressive or informative as what is out there. And their story is pretty interesting, so if you want to read more about them click This:

Merry Christams Everyobody! Santa was good to the devil!!!

Ok, here it is, my first post with tunes!!!

I was thinking about this for months. What will be the first post once Santa brought me the mp3 turntable for Christmas and I've changed my mind 20 times, and still wasn't sure as i sat down to do this. I thought maybe, The Voxpoppers, Ronnie Self, Wanda Jackson, or maybe some hard psych stuff but I'm gonna go with Iron Knowledge and their KILLER track Show Stopper.

Most of my records are all Bottom Feeder found records, which means i dig them out of the garbage basically. Found at Flea Markets, Thrift Shops, Garage Sales and pretty much any other Low Rent way of obtaining vinyl on the cheap but this is one record that once i heard it i knew i had to own it at any cost! (well, almost any)

So I searched the interwebs and found a copy on eBay... And i spent a few dollars on it, something i try not to do but seem to be doing way to much of lately. Blah blah blah.....

Most of you probably know, it's been played on every cool station, featured on the black chains & exhaust comp and was the first cut i played on the That's Heavy Old Man!! mix that DJ Prestige and i put together. (Well, Pres put it together really)

Not much i could find out about these guys. It doesn't look like they have any other music recorded or none that i could find, and other than they were from Youngstown Ohio i don't know much about them

So anyway, there isn't much to say except this cut is straight up wild! Nothing i love more than funky ass brothers with guitars singing about how their "down with cocaine, were doing our thing". And this fits right in with my previous post about "Fuzzy" "Buzzy" & "Wasted" sounding guitar!

So this shit goes out to DJ Prestige for inspiring me to share my collection!
