Bob Luman gives 2 great rockabilly tunes from 1960 on this nifty little picture sleeve.

Bob Luman (born as Robert Glynn Luman 15 April 1937 - December 27, 1978) was an American country and rockabilly singer.

Luman was born in Nacogdoches, Texas. His early interest in music was influenced by his father, an amateur fiddle, guitar and harmonica player. Bob Luman received his first guitar when he was thirteen years of age.
Luman attended high school in Kilgore, where the family had moved after young Bob's birth. It was in high school that Luman started his first band.
Bob Luman had been a baseball star in his high school, and he tried out with the Major League Baseball Pittsburgh Pirates, but when he didn't make it in professional baseball, he decided to concentrate on music. In 1956, he won a talent contest promoted by the Future Farmers of America, which earned him an appearance on the Louisiana Hayride.
For the Hayride, Luman formed a backup band called the Shadows, including James Burton on guitar, James Kirkland on bass and Butch White on drums. In 1957, the band signed with Imperial Records, where they recorded "All Night Long" and "Amarillo Blues."
That same year, the band appeared on the Town Hall Party in Los Angeles, and appeared in the movie Carnival Rock, where they backed up David Houston.
The following year, having been dropped by Imperial Records, Luman signed with Capitol Records, where he released "Try Me" and "I Know My Baby Cares." Capitol Records wanted Luman to change his name, which he refused to do, so he left the record label and signed with Warner Bros. Records, recording "Class of '59" and "Loretta."
In 1960, Luman was drafted into the United States Army. It was while still in the Army that Warner Bros. Records released Luman's best-known crossover hit, "Let's Think About Living," a novelty song that hit #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #9 on the Billboard country music chart. It also reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart.
After leaving the Army in 1962, Luman moved to Nashville, where he married. In 1965, he joined the Grand Ole Opry.

Luman toured frequently in the 60s and 70s, and became popular in Las Vegas, with an act which combined country and rockabilly. He signed with Epic Records in 1968, and had several hits with them, including "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers" and "Still Loving You." "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers" became his biggest country hit, hitting #4 on the country chart. (Steve Wariner, who had earlier been a member of Luman's band, later covered the song in 1984, and he, too, took it to #4 on the country charts.)
Luman's other country hits included "Ain't Got Time To Be Unhappy" (1968), "Ballad of Two Brothers" (with Autry Inman, 1968), "When You Say Love" (1972), "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)" (1973), "Proud Of You Baby" (1975), and "The Pay Phone" (1977). Perhaps his most unusual song was a slow, soulful recitation of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone."
Luman died in Nashville of pneumonia in 1978, at the age of forty-one. After his death, Bear Family Records released several compilations of his songs, including More of the Rocker, Still Rockin' and Carnival Rock.
Luman is a member of both the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.

Buzz Clifford (born Reese Francis Clifford III, October 8, 1941, Berwyn, Illinois) is an American pop singer and songwriter.

Clifford played guitar as a child and won several talent competitions as a teenager. He signed to Bow Records at age 15, releasing a few singles but finding no success. After signing with Columbia Records, he released the single "Hello Mr. Moonlight", which did not chart. The follow-up, "Baby Sittin' Boogie"/"Driftwood" (though "Driftwood" was technically the B-side the record tends to be regarded as a double-A-side), became a crossover hit in the U.S. in 1961, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, #27 R&B, and #28 Country. The record went on to sell over one million copies, and as a result of its success, Columbia tried to groom Clifford as a heartthrob pop singer. He appeared on TV with Perry Como and Merv Griffin and on American Bandstand, and toured the United Kingdom with Freddy Cannon and Dion. Clifford's fame was short-lived, however; further singles went nowhere (a remake of Kay Kyser's "Three Little Fishies" hit #102) and Clifford soon found himself without a recording contract.

After serving in the National Guard, Clifford moved to Los Angeles, California, and found work as a songwriter, writing tunes sung by Keith Barbour, Petula Clark, Clyde McPhatter, Lou Rawls, Leon Russell, Freddie King, and Kris Kristofferson. Later in the 1960s, he was involved with a band called Carp (including actor Gary Busey and songwriter Daniel Moore), who released one album on Epic Records in 1969. After a stint as one third of the group Hamilton Streetcar (with John Boylan of "Appletree Theatre" fame, and original group member Ralph Plummer—the group was originally named on behalf of former member John Burge, aka Ian Hamilton) which in 1969 recorded a self-titled album for Dot Records (Dot DLP25939), he also did recording sessions in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with former Beach Boy David Marks, but these were never issued.

Today i give you the 1st all black punk band Pure Hell:

Established in Philadelphia in 1974, during the flashpoint of the punk culture in New York City, London and Los Angeles. Pure Hell was the first all-Black punk band.

Amid the pioneers of the post garage, acid rock, glam-theatre era of the late 60's/early 70's, Pure Hell are considered one of the first of their kind, comparable to the Sex Pistols, Dead Boys, The Germs. Commercially, the band had little success, and only released this one single. There was an album recorded that was never released but it has since seen the light of day now.

Adam and the Ants 2nd 7 inch. I just picked this up at the Flea Market and while it isn't all that rare i only paid a buck for it. It was sitting in a pile of trash that had just been picked clean by some other record hoarders so i got sloppy seconds and this was about all that was left. Too bad too because the guys in front of me pulled out a bunch of pretty cool albums. A bunch of early punk stuff by The Ramones, Runaways, Saints, etc... Oh well.... You win some you lose some... I only paid a buck for it....

As i stated in my Drunk Driver post, i am glad kids are still making noise out there and while this is nowhere near as noizey as D.D. these kids and i do mean kids (just look at them baby faces) have their own brand of noise going on.

A DJ at me old radio station turned me on to these guys. (Thanks Mike!!!) I made it a point to see them at the last SXSW and was not disappointed. There was much feedback and guitar and amp abuse. I stood right next to a Mr. J. Mascis who knows a thing or 2 about guitar rock.... I bought this 7 inch at the gig... I'll admit i am a bit behind the times when it comes to newer bands but i keep finding little gems like this hidden amongst todays "pop"ular musick,,,, and that is fine by me.

here is the 411:

The band was formed by Michigan natives Michael Troutman (aka Michael Awesome), Allison Busch (aka Allison Awesome), and Derek Stanton (aka Derek Awesome) in Brooklyn, New York, in 2004. Inspired by Detroit garage rock, they came to the attention of Thurston Moore, who signed the band to his Ecstatic Peace label. They released a self-titled debut album in 2006, which was followed by a second album, Electric Aborigines in 2008, both released by Ecstatic Peace. (Vinyl editions for both albums were released by American Dust.) The first album drew comparisons with the Stooges (with Stylus Magazine going as far as saying "there are times when you could play Fun House and this album back-to-back and not be able to tell the difference between the two") as did Electric Aborigines, although this album expanded the band's sound and drew comparisons with The Scientists and Spacemen 3. The band were described by Rolling Stone as sounding like "a grimier version of Sonic Youth". In 2007, the song ¨Hat Energy¨ from the album Awesome Color appeared in the film I Know Who Killed Me, starring Lindsay Lohan. After the second album, the band toured the world in support of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. during 2008. They recorded and released a new album called Massa Hypnos on April 6, 2010. They have been touring to promote it with Tyvek and Hair Police.

For those not in the know, this is Big Tim Cronin and John Kleiman of Monster Magnet fame doing some sort of negative, self deprecating, alt country, 60's, pop, psych, mash up that oft sounds like The Monkees on a bad bad trip.... Tim is my fave lyricist of ll time... really great stuff. My kids get a kick out this one too, a sure sign of true genius!

Don Hinson and The Rigamorticians- Monster Jerk - Riboflavin Flavored Non-carbanated Polyunsaturated Blood

Here is one time Vegas radio deejay Don Hinson's "Monster Dance Party" picture sleeve 45. Produced by Gary Paxton (Monster Mash) it's probably best remembered these for "Riboflavin Flavored, Non Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood" which was covered by goth punkers 45 Grave in 1980.

In 1980, 45 Grave recorded their first song, "Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood", included on the LAFMS (Los Angeles Free Music Society) art rock compilation album, "Darker Skratcher". Don Hinson at the time was a popular radio personality in Las Vegas, Nevada (and later for 20 years in Los Angeles, California). Mr. Hinson recorded the song in the wake of Bobby "Boris" Pickett's 1962 novelty song hit "Monster Mash" hoping to emulate the latter song's success and have an international hit record. Both "Monster Mash" and the Don Hinson original recording of "Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood" were produced by noted novelty song record producer Gary S. Paxton of Skip & Flip.

The Lurkers - Out In The Dark EP - Beggers Banquet 19

Formed in London in 1977, the first-generation punk outfit the Lurkers originally comprised vocalist Howard Wall, guitarist Pete Stride, bassist Arturo Bassick (born Arthur Billingsley) and drummer Manic Esso (a.k.a. Pete Haynes). Trumpteted as Britain's answer to the Ramones, the group debuted with the single "Shadow," released on the fledgling Beggars Banquet label; Bassick soon exited, and with ex-Saints bassist Kim Bradshaw, the Lurkers reached the U.K. Top Ten with the follow-ups "Ain't Got a Clue' and "I Don't Need to Tell Her." Their debut LP Fulham Fallout appeared in 1978, with God's Lonely Men arriving the next year. By the early 1980s, the Lurkers had dissolved, reuniting intermittently during the course of the decade to yield LPs including 1989's Edge of the Mountain and the live Wild Times Again.

The Lurkers get high marks for being relatively early in the punk game here (1979) and the 1st 2 tracks on this ep are pretty cool if not a little flat after 30 years, i'm sure in 79 this sounded like a bullet now i'm not so sure... but they lose almost everything they gained with by wearing their influences way to proudly on their sleeve on the 2nd side by ripping off The Ramones w/ Suzie is a Floozie and trying waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to hard to be The Clash (Christ wasn't one clash enough?) w/ a "dub" or pub version of a pretty ripping song Cyanide... But what the fuck do i know...??? So what do you think? Important punk document or B grade mimicking?
