The Poppy Family - Shadows On My Wall

While in recent years dozens of would-be hipsters have written about the dark undercurrents to be found in the music of the Carpenters, anyone looking for a truly great bummed-out soft rock experience needs to dig up the long out of print debut LP from Vancouver's Poppy Family. While producer, arranger, songwriter, and general straw boss Terry Jacks later found fame for his hit adaptation of Jacques Brel's "Seasons in the Sun," his greatest work was with his then-wife Susan Jacks and their group, the Poppy Family. Blending moody soft pop with light psychedelia, the group hit a rich vein of gorgeous melancholy that made sadness sound positively sensual...

This is a strange soft spooky psych tune that will raise the hairs on the back of your neck...

Red Boy, you got your ears on...???

Couldn't agree more. 'Where Evil Grows' is one of my faves! What with their cover of 'Endless Sleep' by Jody Reynolds, I'd say they were making it a point to be rather maudlin.

I gotta get a turntable w/a usb plug, you need to hear the poppy family's version of Jody Reynolds rockabilly classic Endless Sleep (which was one of the late Robert Quine's favorite records, he ended just like the record). It's one of the great unknown 70's discs.

Weird, I just found the Poppy Family`s "Endless Sleep" 45 this summer on vacation in Croatia. On the "Yugoton" label! Actually there is a "Decca" AND a "Yugoton" logo on the record. The Yugoslav brand of Communism must have allowed a little bit of Capitalism...
Thanks for the nice post!

Now that I think about it, do you think "Poppy Family" is an opium reference?

i always thought so....

The tunes certainly are of a dreamy dug induced ethereal nature no...???

Devil Dick said...

that's er, "drug" induced....

Good Idea. I`ll post the Poppy Family`s "Endless Sleep" 45 on Yugoton next week on BERLIN BEATET BESTES. The record and sleeve are in good shape too.

Best wishes
Andreas
