2/4/06 - 2/5/06 - Mix Tape

Another mix tape... This one from 2/4/06 & 2/5/06. 2006 was a pretty turbulent time in my life and from the looks of all these mix tapes i am finding a lot of them are from '06. Looks like i used making these as a sort of therapy... i know lots of alcohol was involved.... self medicating w/ liquor and music...

I know that number. Sometime between '92 and 3, I was doing some jobbing illustration and my fascination with scissor cut-ups spilled over into home taping.

I didn't have a turntable during this period, such was the turbulence, so direct from vinyl was not an option. What I did have was a suitcase full of C-90s, which I cannibalized on twin deck boom box into various running orders which suited my needs.

I spent as much time creating little jackets for them as I did on the music; working in frenetic bursts. Pretty soon I had a collection of maybe one hundred or so which fitted into this little book case around an electric fire. Some cover out; some packed conventionally with just the spines on display. As much some kind of primitive art installation as a functional library.

I took some photographs of them and framed them on the walls. Shots of them arranged this way and that; the clear plastic worked over with liquid paper, inks, oil paints straight out the tube.

I'm enjoying looking at those photographs of your own compilations. As much a fetish, maybe, as vinyl junkie OCD.

Very cool.

i never concentrated on cover art for these as these were made mostly for my hellish 2 hour daily commute to work and i never thought anyone would ever see them but me so they are pretty generic in an artistic sense. it was all about the music... i'd also like to say that these are pretty varied/eclectic mixes and i like somethings better than others but that is all up to ya'll to decide what you like and don't....

Well. I get a buzz just out of vicariously reading other people's handwriting, I have to admit.

Really, it was all about the music for me back then too. I just had this time on my hands and got totally fixated on it. Like a mutt pissing all around its bed.

I have a tendency to do that.

Two hours is one hell of a commute. The most I ever suffered is half that. A third of that, at least, in gridlock. F@ck that shit.
