The Space Negros - Go to Russia...

This is a weird one... Starting with the name and ending with the music.... I mean "Space Negros"...? and the music sounds like twisted TV theme show music from a bad dream or nightmare. Even their take on the Beatles is a little unsettling. ART rock, or no wave, or post punk or whatever it is you wanna call just call it odd. Someone called it an exploration of exotic music and rock. I guess that works too...

All i could come up with in my 2 second search of the webs is that Erik Lindgren seems to be the main cat in this odd mess and he runs the label this was put out on, Arf! Arf! records.

Erik Lindgren (15 December 1954) is an American composer and keyboards player. He runs Arf! Arf! Records, and has led (or been a member of) several ensembles such as The Moving Parts, The Space Negros, The Rising Storm, and Birdsongs of the Mesozoic.

Lindgren was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in December 1954.[1] He attended Northfield Mount Hermon School from 1969–1972, and received his BA in Music from Tufts University in 1976 where he worked with T. J. Anderson. In 1974–75 he spent his junior year abroad in London studying composition at the Guildhall School of Music with Alfred Nieman and piano with Birgette Wild. Lindgren received an MA in music composition and piano performance from the University of Iowa in 1977 where he studied with Donald Jenni, Richard Hervig and Peter Lewis.

As a contemporary classical composer, Lindgren has a catalog of over five dozen works, ranging from solo piano pieces to chamber music to orchestral works. He also owns Foot Foot Music BMI which publishes all of his original compositions. In 1978, Lindgren established Sounds Interesting Productions, a commercial recording studio and music production company based in Cambridge, MA.[1] In 1998, he relocated his facility to Middleborough, MA. National and regional credits include original scores for ABC, NBC CBS and PBS, Eastpak, Boston Globe, Basketball Hall Of Fame, Jordan Marsh, Polaroid, Prentice Hall and the Christmas Tree Shops. Lindgren also markets The Well-Tempered Music Library that consists of seven CDs of stock commercial music that he composed and produced.
Lindgren was a founding member of the new music ensemble Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic that Billboard Magazine described as “a mesmerizing venture into the space age jungle.” The quartet has toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada and held residencies at Dartmouth College, Emory University, Duke, UNCA and the Massachusetts College of Art. Birdsongs’ has recorded for the Rykodisc, Cuneiform and Ace of Hearts labels and released an album in 2005. Recently the group collaborated with Duplex Planet editor/National Public Radio correspondent David Greenberger on 1001 Real Apes.
The composer celebrated his 50th Birthday performing live, original works, at The Longy School of Music, Pickman Hall, Cambridge, MA (June 4, 2005).

For over twenty years, Lindgren has run the Arf! Arf! record label which has released five-dozen archival CDs documenting ’60s Garage/Psychedelic Rock and “Incredibly Strange Music.” Arf! Arf! issued four CD retrospectives by his ’80s experimental studio group The Space Negros. Lindgren has also produced over one hundred records for such diverse artists as Willie Loco Alexander, the Rising Storm, The Turbines, The Cynics, Magic Mose & his Royal Rockers, featuring 'Blind Sam,' Ed “Moose” Savage And His Litany Of Complaints, and harmonica virtuoso Richard Hunter.

Tony March - Baked Bean Baby

Tony here is trying hard to rock here and it comes across a wee bit, but falls short of Buddy Holly or whoever it is he is trying to imitate. (Elvis?) It has its charm though.

File Under: Not quite Rockabilly.

The Mojo Men - Dance With Me

Kooky garage dance number. Cool organ.

This San Francisco group was organized, in part, by Sly Stone of Sly & The Family Stone fame. In fact, this group was originally called Sly & the Mojo Men. This song was a minor nationwide hit in late 1965, but the group's follow-up ("Sit Down, I Think I Love You") did much better.

Denny Provisor - It Really Tears Me Up

Denny was a one time member of The Grass Roots. Here he is in 1965 a few years earlier on his own with a tune that has a great gritty vocal and a few nice Byrds guitar parts. Too me it sounds a bit like a cross between The Byrds, Steppenwolf and the Monkees. Go Figure...

Oliver Nelson And His Orchestra - Skull Session

Ever wonder where them West Coast gangsters got that smooth and funky keyboard sound & groove from...???

Oliver Edward Nelson (June 4, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri – October 28, 1975) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, arranger and composer.

Oliver Nelson's family was musical: his brother was also a saxophonist who played with Cootie Williams in the 1940s, and his sister sang and played piano. Nelson began learning to play the piano when he was six, and started on the saxophone at eleven. From 1947 he played in "territory" bands around Saint Louis, before joining the Louis Jordan big band from 1950 to 1951, playing alto saxophone and arranging. After military service in the Marines, he returned to Missouri to study music composition and theory at Washington and Lincoln Universities, graduating in 1958. While back in his hometown of St. Louis, he met and married the former Miss Eileen Mitchell. From this union came a son, Oliver Nelson Jr.. Oliver and Eileen divorced, and, after graduation, Nelson moved to New York, playing with Erskine Hawkins and Wild Bill Davis, and working as the house arranger for the Apollo Theater in Harlem. He also played on the West Coast briefly with the Louie Bellson big band in 1959, and in the same year began recording as leader with small groups. From 1960 to 1961 he played tenor saxophone with Quincy Jones, both in the U.S. and on tour in Europe.

After six albums as leader between 1959 and 1961 for the Prestige label (with such musicians as Kenny Dorham, Johnny Hammond Smith, Eric Dolphy, Roy Haynes, King Curtis and Jimmy Forrest), Nelson's big breakthrough came with The Blues and the Abstract Truth, on Impulse!, featuring the tune "Stolen Moments," now considered a standard. This made his name as a composer and arranger, and he went on to record a number of big-band albums, as well as working as an arranger for Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Eddie Davis, Johnny Hodges, Wes Montgomery, Buddy Rich, Jimmy Smith, Billy Taylor, Stanley Turrentine, Irene Reid, Gene Ammons and many others. He also led all-star big bands in various live performances between 1966 and 1975. Nelson continued to perform as a soloist during this period, though increasingly on soprano saxophone.
In 1967, Nelson moved to Los Angeles. Apart from his big-band appearances (in Berlin, Montreux, New York, and Los Angeles), he toured West Africa with a small group. He also spent a great deal of time composing music for television (Ironside, Night Gallery, Columbo, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, and Longstreet) and films (Death of a Gunfighter and he arranged Gato Barbieri's music for Last Tango in Paris). He produced and arranged for pop stars such as Nancy Wilson, James Brown, the Temptations, and Diana Ross. Less well-known is the fact that Nelson composed several symphonic works, and was also deeply involved in jazz education, returning to his alma mater, Washington University, in the summer of 1969 to lead a five-week long clinic that also featured such guest performers as Phil Woods, Mel Lewis, Thad Jones, Sir Roland Hanna, and Ron Carter. Nelson died of a heart attack on 28 October 1975, aged 43.

This track also featured Lonnie Liston Smith: Lonnie Liston Smith, Jr. (born December 28, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia) is an American jazz, soul, and funk musician who played with important free jazz artists such as Pharoah Sanders and Miles Davis before forming Lonnie Liston Smith And The Cosmic Echoes, recording a number of albums widely regarded as classics in the fusion / Quiet Storm / smooth jazz and acid jazz genres.

Hines, Hines And Dad - Hambone

Today a funky little pop nugget from 1967 from Maurice Hines, Sr., Maurice Hines, Jr., & Gregory Hines, the three were known as "The Hines Kids" and later as "The Hines Brothers" only to have the name change again in 1963 to "Hines, Hines, and Dad". Yep, THAT gregory Hines.

Only Living Witness - Freaklaw - Some Will Never Know

What we have here is some post hardcore - hardcore w/ a metal tinge from up Boston/Alston way....
The band was formed in 1989 in Boston by Jonah Jenkins (vocals) and Eric Stevenson (guitar, ex-Formicide). Eric's brother Kevin Stevenson (guitar) and former Formicide-bandmate Roy Costa (bass) completed the line-up. In 1991 Kevin and Roy were replaced by Craig Silverman and Chris Crowley. Kevin and Roy would go on to form The Shods.
Some real groove and power to this shit, w/ thick heavy Sab like riffs and capped off by some great vox. Only living witness were great and they had one of the finest singers ever in Mr. Jonah Jenkins. And one of my persoanl faves of all time. The dude has pipes, intesity and itelligence.
Since only living witness he has been a part of Milltown, Milligram and Raw Radar war among others, and started his own record label, TRAKTOR7, releasing albums by Milligram, Crash and Burn, Lamont, The Hidden, Waltham, Blacktail, Quintaine Americana, Morgan Knockers, and Black Helicopter.

The Aquatones - She's The One For Me

A nice little rocker from 1958 from the Aquatones. This is the flip to their hit 1st and only "hit" record "You". I prefer this side...

Here is the Wiki low down:

The Aquatones were a doo-wop group in the 1950s who charted just once with "You", a ballad which was also covered by Gale Storm.

The Aquatones were true one hit wonders whose subsequent singles for the Fargo label all failed to reach the Hot 100.

The Aquatones were a four part harmony band with a female lead vocal, Lynne Nixon. The group began as three guys from Valley Stream, New York. They formed in 1956 as the Rhythm Kings with Dave Goddard, Larry Vannata, and Gene McCarthy as members. They came together to record a song written by Dave for their junior class play at Valley Stream Central High School. All of the guys played instruments as well as sang - Gene the clarinet and tenor sax, Larry the alto and tenor sax, and Dave the piano. Bob Boden would play drums when they performed live. A classmates father, a record distributor, heard the group and suggested that they add a high falsetto voice. Shortly thereafter, Larry met Lynne Nixon at a dance and asked Gene and Dave to give her an audition. Upon hearing Lynne's voice they agreed to add her to the group. At first, Lynne only sang backgrounds, until Larry wrote the song "You" for her to sing.
The group later changed its name to the Aquatones (as Dave describes it "so the guys could wear a 'cool' shirt from the 1950s - aqua with a black velvet 'V' down the front). In 1957 the three original members - Larry Vannata, David Goddard and Eugene McCarthy, decided to add Lynne as a fourth member to give the group some versatility. It was not long after the group became a foursome that they found themselves performing at a talent contest at Malverne High School. The contest entitled Stairway to the Stars was just that for the group as local real estate mogul turned music promoter Lou Fargo heard the group and liked what he saw and heard. In December 1957, he signed the group and off to the studio they went to record on Fargo's own label.

Their first song was "You" (Fargo 1001 b/w She's the One For Me). It was a group harmony recording. The record hit on the Billboard chart in April 1958. Such classics as "I Met Him on a Sunday" by the Shirelles, "Zoom Zoom Zoom" by the Collegians, and "Sweet Little Sixteen" by Chuck Berry were out at the same time. While it did very well in the East, it only managed to hit #21 across America.

Mody-Vation - Ghetto Kung Fu

Bruce Lee and Kung Fu movies in general seemed to be a big hit back in the 70’s and left their mark in the funk & soul scene of the day, as there is a myriad of kung fu related songs. Here is one…. No idea who Mody-Vation were but this is a cool and strange little nugget of Kung Fu related 70’s (1974) funk that borders on that disco line…

Tank - (He Fell In Love With A) Stromtrooper - Blood, Guts and Beer - Live Version

I remember walking in to the "Peddler's Village" music store right around the year of this release (1982) and seeing this picture disk 7 inch and buying it. I think remember seeing that they were on tour with Motorhead at around this time, (most likely in an issue of Kerrang!) So i bought it... Tank were one of the few NWOBHM bands that kind of crossed over into the "punk" catagory and seeing as Bassist - Singer Algy Ward was once a member of The Damned that kind of makes sense. They had a no nonsense approach and were pretty straight forward. Bringing that Motorhead beer drinking no bullshit attitide infused with a slight punk vibe. This was all denim and leather. None of that glammy, look at me makeup and clothes bullshit. And i love it! Still do! When Algy cries, "What's Inside Me!? - Blood Guts & Beer!" I'm all in!

These guys and Holocaust are probably my fave early 80's metal for all of the reasons sited above.... NO BULLSHIT!
