The Norman Brothers - Jaggers Recording Studio Acetate

Very weird this one. I can't find anything about "The Norman Brothers" at all. It's heavy on ukulele and piano. Song 2 on this side is titled "Fused On Tips, Ca't Slip Off" but it's obviously a cover of Monday Monday by the Momas And Popas. Song 4 is called "Number 3 In The Green Book" but it's a version of "Please don't talk about me when I'm gone". I did not record song 1 "I Enjoy Being A Girl" because it skips very badly. The other side starts with "Steam Boat Mickey" but it's about The Robert E Lee.... Song 2 on this side "The Little Bird Who Lost His Way Flying South For The Winter" is a version of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" and is actually pretty cool. Some of the others don't sound familiar to me but i would assume they are all covers??? I know i've heard number 4 on this side but can't place it.... Maybe Elvis???? Number 5 is a ragtime version of Old Time Religion but called "Box 5, Del Rio Texas". It makes no sense to me.... can someone explain this weirdness to me? The only thing i know for sure about this record is that it was cut with HOT STYLUS! Help?!?

Another lost item found digging. These things always kinda bum me out when i find them because they were obviously meant for family & not some knucklehead digging for records. They just get discarded and lost forever and i'm sure no one in the family gives a shit. So when i turn them up and they are cheap i buy them. I like listening to them. It's sorta like a time machine or like being an audio peeping Tom. You go back to 1946 and hear a little message from another time and place that was never meant for you to hear. This one from Turk & Jenne. Looks like they were sending it to their Ma. Maybe one of these days someone will google turk & jenne or Gaston Ragno and find it. Probably not... They really didn't have a whole lot to say other than Jenne is gonna be 11 and Turk likes the phrase Hey-Bop-A-Re-Bop, as he says it on both sides of the record. Basically just horsing around. They start speaking a different language. Not sure, but i think it might be Italian? Most people won't find any interest in this and that's fine, but i look at it as audio archeology... either dig in or don't.

I got this one with a bunch of other acetates i picked up a while back and can't find much about "The Rogues". Any help would be appreciated.... Sounds a bit like a more modern Coasters....

Unknown Soul Acetate - I Can't Say No To You

A while back i picked up a bunch of acetates. i don't know who this is or what year it is from. The only thing i could find out about it is that Studio 76 @ 1650 Broadway in NYC where this was recorded is where Hendrix recorded with Curtis Knight in the 60's & early 70's, so i will assume this is from around that same time period... I found this little passage on earlyhendrix.com

Studio "76"
Ed Chalpin's studio where Curtis Knight & the Squires recorded between 1965-1967. Studio "76" was located at 1650 Broadway, in 1970 the name of the studio was changed to "Dimensional Sound. Inc." and it was moved to a new address at 245 West 55th Street. Another Studio "76" (opened in 1965, operated at least until 1972 4) was located in Los Angeles, this could have been a sister company to Chalpin's Studio "76"?

Other than that i have no idea....

As for the song.... Starts off w/ a cool bass line and the bass gets a good workout throughout the song but i'd much rather hear some funky guitar instead of harmonica through the whole thing. I like the male voice popping in and out on top of the female voice but seems a bit hap-hazzard. it has charm but doesn't bowl you over. I wish i knew who was singing....???

Unknown Acapella Doo Wop Group - (Del Rockers?)

Ok, so i bought this acetate for 25 cents and I'm a bit puzzled (not hard to do). There are 2 different sets of writing on this thing. The pencil underneath i can not make out, but on top of the pencil in pen it says Del Rockers, 1981, Ricky - Tom - Frank - Walt + Mike on both sides. Is this really from 1981? I have several other Audiodisc acetates and they look just like this one but are from the early to late 50's. Were they still making these audiodisc acetates in 1981? and the acapella doo wop sounds on this sound hauntingly authentic. Did the Del Rockers nail it in 1981? Or did some band called the Del Rockers mock up this acetate as a goof or trick? I don't know.... Both tunes are pretty good for accapella, which I'm not really a big fan of. I don't really know the names of the songs but i took a stab considering they say the same thing a bunch of times in each song. If any of this rings a bell drop a note and let me know. Thanks.

Bertha Collins - Don't Forget I Love You - Just Us Two

OK, today I have something special for you all.

Now some of you may not care at all for what I’m about to lay on you but to me at least it’s very special and it is definitely some very rare stuff here. How rare? How about rare as in I own the only copies in existence? Now that may not mean that the monetary value on these is high as i highly doubt anyone would really want these but to me they are priceless.

See Bertha Collins is my Great Grandmother and what we have here are some of the songs she wrote and recorded. My Grandpa or “PeePa” as we have always called him recently gave these acetates to me and now I give them to you.

As far as I can tell and from what I’ve been told my Great Granny fancied herself a “song writer” and wrote these songs as far back as my Grandpa could remember. He was born in the 20’s and says he remembers them as far back as he can recall but there is no date listed on the acetates. As far as we know these are the only copies that exist of these two songs. She did write other songs as I have at least one hand written music sheets for a song called “Tomay” but no recording. And it looks as if only “Don’t Forget I Love You” was properly published as this is the only one that has sheet music. The sheet music has a date of 1952 but we think that is only the date it was finally “published” as I said before my Grandpa says he can remember her playing these records was he was a kid, and that was a LONG time ago.

Bertha wrote these songs and is playing the piano on the recordings but no one can remember who the male vocal accompaniment was supplied by (sorry fella) as nothing is listed on the records.

Well, I told you all this would be an eclectic ride. I guess this is where I get my modest musicianship and love of music from, genes man, genes…

I love past blue ribbon. In fact I am drinking one right now: Still can't find it in bottles in my neck of the New Jersey woods though...

I used to love driving up the Garden State Parkway when i was a kid and see the Pabst plant with it's giant Pabst bottle on top. That plant is now long since gone and defunct. Who would have thought that many year later that same young boy would have drunk thousands of said beer...



I'm sending this one out to my blog pal over at "I'm Learning to Share" for his love of all things oddball & kitch.... I doubt many people will have much use for this but it's cool to atleast listen to once or twice... and as i said before, "eclectic"...
man, i love that word.

Picked this acetate up at a yard sale years ago and could never really understand what the hell they were going to do with this thing, i mean it's more than just a jingle is a whole song about PBR! Clocking in at over 4 mins long this is about triple what a regular song being played on the radio back then would have clocked in at...

So tell me, what were they going to do with this thing???
