Roky Erickson & The Explosives - The Ribeye Bros. SOLD OUT!
I was lucky enough to see Roky Erickson & The Explosives at the sold out show in Hoboken's Maxwell's last night with the added bonus of one of my all time NJ bands the Ribeye Bothers.
First time seeing the Ribeyes with new drummer and new git player and although the band seemed to to think it was "sucky" i thought they "rocked"...
They seemed a bit heavier and a bit more fast paced than previous live encounters and the band seemed none to pleased by that. I happened to have enjoyed it. It was like a juiced up punk rock ribeye's....
I know that part of their schtick is the whole self deprecating humor but it starts to take its toll after a while. Look, you guys are good, really, really fucking good... Enjoy it for a hot second will ya? Tim & Jon are geniuses... Big Tim is one of the best lyrics writter's ever. Yep, ever!
That being said it was the 2nd time seeing Roky in the last year and even though their was some slight technical problems over all the band was tight and Roky seemed a bit more animated than the last time i saw him in Brooklyn his first time around. They played all the "hits" with one excpetion, i didn't hear "I have always been here before". But It was a great night except for the goon behind me complaining about 2 dollars soda's while Rocky was playing 2 headed dog and saying how he was going to "punch somebody's face in" - i feel lucky to have seen this legend again. Thank you Jennifer....
Roky should really need no introduction but if your reading this and don't know who The Ribeye Brothers are please click that linky and check them out. They are a great NJ band worthy of opening up for Roky!
Cheers!

i was there last night ...drove up from philly to see roky and the explosives ....the show was a monster from start to finish!!!! roky was in fine form and sounded oh so good !!! i managed to be directly in front of him and although we were not hearing the best sound it was amazing to stand before such a living icon!! this is the leader of the f***in 13th floor elevators for godsakes! i found myself mesmerized by his performance and he is much more together than i expected ! it was really touching to see that his group seems to be genuinly concerned about his well being and personal safty and mental stability . the explosives are by far the best b/u band i/ve heard roky with since the elevators (much more rootsy and rockin than the aliens!)the ribeye bros. were a great choice for opening band and they kicked might a$$ this was my first time seeing them and i hope they will c'mon down to philly as there are many appropriate clubs for them to play there from 1 to 100 i rat last night 200!!!!! c'mon back soon roky we'll be there!
great review (and blog!) i saw roky last year here in london (england), in possibly his first performance - but certainly his ever first tour - outside the USA. it was amazing, and quite unbelievable/surreal to see him not-so-far-off, especially as i'd had my debut screening of the You're Gonna Miss Me documentary the day before. Via a friend of a friend (the Elevators biographer) my girlfriend & I actually got to meet and chat with him at the post show party (Roky was on what appeared to be lemonade, and was chaperoned by his brother Sumner). Had a bit of a chat with him & found him to be equally economical with language offstage as on (if you're with me!) but a friendly fella... got some pics with him & an autograph. Hats off to Sumner for what he has done for Roky... (I note from a review of the DVD of the aforementioned doc. that Roky is now actually DRIVING {!}, not to mention voting). Sumner proved himself to be a genuine kinda chap by taking the trouble to e-mail some pics of us that he took on his own camera... Like a said, a wonderful performance by Roky... still hard to believe I've got to see him. Suppose a new album's out of the question???
Best wishes from England, James
I feel very lucky that "WE" got to see this legend twice in less then a year......
um hello, plaese to let said DJ know roky erikson is in town next time..thank you.
I saw ROKY this year at the Forum in England after having to wait 25 odd years to finally see him. I travelled up and down from Holland just to see this gig. When he finally took the stage I got tears in my eyes to see him in such a relative good state. If it was anybody else but ROKY I'd probably would have left because of all the little mistakes and mishaps. But this being ROKY and finally seeing him live made it the best gig I'd ever seen. God bless ROKY and God blees Sumner for taking such good care of him.
