Morgus and the 3 Ghouls - Morgus the Magnificent

This is suppossedly Dr John under the name "Morgus and the 3 Ghouls" making reference to Morgus' show? True?

Morgus the Magnificent, aka Momus Alexander Morgus, is a fictional character on television shows that originated in the New Orleans, Louisiana television market. From the late 1950s into the 1980s Morgus was a "horror host" of late-night science fiction and horror movies. Morgus is a quintessential mad scientist created and portrayed by New Orleans actor Sid Noel. Assisted by executioner styled sidekick Chopsley, his well-intentioned experiments served as book-end pieces to the films, and typically go awry at the last minute.

Morgus first appeared on late night television on January 3, 1959, in the House of Shock, hosting the science fiction and horror movies in between experiments.

This here is a rare 45 cut from one of the more famous "monster" records called Dracula's greatest Hits. Gene Moss was doing his best Dracula impersonation on the album that came with monster trading cards....

Jimmy Cross - I Want My Baby Back

If the Teenage Death Song wasn't dead itself by 1965 — and it wasn't — it certainly wasn't because Jimmy Cross didn't do his darnedest to put the last few nails in its coffin, so to speak. A preposterously funny sendup of the genre in general and of "Leader of the Pack" and "Last Kiss" in particular, Cross' one chart record, written by Perry Botkin, Jr. and Gil Garfield, is impossible to describe without giving away the joke, but I assure you, he does get his baby back, one way or another. Putting a B-side on this would have been overkill, so flipping this disc will turn up something called "Play the Other Side", which is actually the instrumental track, sans vocals and sound effects — a cue to deejays worthy of Phil "Tedesco and Pitman" Spector himself. Cross went from here to something called "The Ballad of James Bong", a tall tale about pop stars based on...well, yeah, you got it.

The Monotones were a six-member African American "doo wop" vocal group in the 1950s. They are considered a "one-hit wonder," as their only hit song was "(Who Wrote) The Book of Love", which peaked at #5 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1958.

I'll take the legend of sleepy hollow over the book of love any day...

The Monotones formed in 1955 when the seven original singers — all residents of the Baxter Terrace housing project in Newark, New Jersey — began performing covers of popular songs. The members of the Monotones were :

first tenor Warren Davis (b. March 1, 1939)
second tenor George Malone (January 5, 1940 - October 5, 2007)

Today we have The Hollywood Flames, who were an American R&B vocal group in the 1950s, best known for their 1957 hit, "Buzz Buzz Buzz", but by 1958 when when this cut was recorded "monster" music was all the rage and these cats were up to the task here with a really rockin' "monster" tune. And is it just me or does the cat up front in the promo pic actually look like a black frankenstein...??? Maybe i had one too many beers tonight....?

Lin(da) Ware liked this one so much she put hher name on it 2x's....

As I stated yesterday the Red Boy and I got together for some ghoulish fun and put some of our all time fave Halloween 45’s to the needle and put together a nice little 2 part mix in preparation of the final stages of Halloween!

Bob & Jerry – Ghost Satellite

DevilDick: Odd one here. Don’t know much about old Bob-& Jerry here except that this is supposedly one of Lux & Ivy’s (Uh, The Cramps…) faves and that Bob is Bob Summers on the gee-tar and Jerry is Jerry Le Fors:

And that these two wrote songs for Patsy Cline! I guess trying to catch fire with the “space” and “monster” themes of the 50’s they coupled the 2 together for this creepy instro. And upon further review I see this weird little instrumental is from 1958. It’s made the cut on various comps and I also see that The Hound has a liking for this tune. Good enough for me!


The Jayhawks - The Creature

RedBoy: Y'all remember 'Stranded in the Jungle' right? Well the 'Cadets' cribbed their hit version from these so-called So-cal 'Hawks' (the Gadabouts also released a version on Mercury). Tryin' to follow the 'Flash' formula on their new imprint 'Aladdin', the 'Hawk's' penned the enclosed 57'novelty romp, this time leavin' the jungle behind for a cemetery. I've always loved this tune. Perhaps it is upon hearing the phrase "Creature from the Black Lagoon" sung during a choral interlude, either that, or the fact the somebody 'wanders into the wrong record', a device the band would attempt again in their later incarnation the Vibrations!

Kip Tyler & the Flips - She's My Witch

RedBoy: Holy shit! This record is amazing! Definitely one of my top five faves, this record sounds like the audio equivalent of two people bangin'. Most people know ole' Flip from 'Jungle Hop, released on the Challenge label in 1958. And while 'Hop' is a stone-cold-killer - no doubt - 'Witch' is the jewel in Kip's Royal-Crown-Crown. Featuring sax-blaster Jim Horn (*wink*), on loan from Duane Eddy's Rebels, 'Witch' grinds it's way into the hips of history like no other song can.

The Crewnecks – Rockin’ Zombie

DevilDick: Straight outta Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania we have The Crewnecks w/ a classic Halloween cut -Rockin’ Zombie. Unlike the creepy overtones of the mummy’s bracelet or mad witch this here cut is a fun rocker that will get all the Zombie’s shaking!!!

It took the devil a while to finally unearth an original 45, but I did, and here it is for you now!


The Three-D's - Graveyard Cha Cha

RedBoy: Can't say much about this cha cha chiller besides the fact that it is hardly 'Square' despite what the label might suggest. Cut in either 56' or 57', these D's also recorded several sides for Brunswick, Paris & Pilgrim before passing into that most frightening dimension of all - obscurity.





Lee Ross – The Mummy’s Bracelet

DevilDick: One time member of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, (is that true?) Lee Ross gives a spine chilling tale! If ever you needed a deterrent from going to a museum and steeling a bracelet off the arm of a mummy then this song is for you! When I put this song on one of my Halloween mixes last year for my kids, my little man who was 6 at the time told me “that song is too creepy Dad! Did the mummy kill the person?” yep son, the mummy killed the person, let this be a lesson, DO NOT STEAL FROM THE DEAD!!!!

Editor's note: Both me and me and DevilDick steal from the dead every day and I ain't never "turned to stone"...ok, maybe just that one time.

“You Can Get Him Frankenstein”, co-written by Phil Spector and Ahmet Ertegun, just one more of the many GREAT rock and roll records inspired by the golden age of horror movies.

The Castle Kings themselves were a vocal group who cut two singles for Atlantic records before promptly disappearing into obscurity.

Anyone know who these guys were???

Time is running out for Halloween goodness, the leaves are changing and the weather is starting to get colder each morning here on the East Coast and less than a week away for all hollows eve so today you get 2 Halloween goodies froom the Johnson Brothers.

The Brothers Johnson are Alvin and Edward Johnson and these cuts were recorded after their brief recording career as The Souvenirs.

This 45 is from 1959 and rumored to have Eddie Cochran playing guitar on Zombie Lou???

Even though i believe Casting My Spell was written by the Johnson Bros I first heard this song done by The Johnny Otis Show & while his a great version on its own I think this version is better....

Here is another great creepy surf style Halloween instrumental by the frantics. the guys were from Seattle from 56 to 66. This tunes creepy vibe is totally enhanced by the spoken word intro and werewolf howls! The kids love this one!

Don Hinson and The Rigamorticians- Monster Jerk - Riboflavin Flavored Non-carbanated Polyunsaturated Blood

Here is one time Vegas radio deejay Don Hinson's "Monster Dance Party" picture sleeve 45. Produced by Gary Paxton (Monster Mash) it's probably best remembered these for "Riboflavin Flavored, Non Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood" which was covered by goth punkers 45 Grave in 1980.

In 1980, 45 Grave recorded their first song, "Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood", included on the LAFMS (Los Angeles Free Music Society) art rock compilation album, "Darker Skratcher". Don Hinson at the time was a popular radio personality in Las Vegas, Nevada (and later for 20 years in Los Angeles, California). Mr. Hinson recorded the song in the wake of Bobby "Boris" Pickett's 1962 novelty song hit "Monster Mash" hoping to emulate the latter song's success and have an international hit record. Both "Monster Mash" and the Don Hinson original recording of "Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood" were produced by noted novelty song record producer Gary S. Paxton of Skip & Flip.

Moontrekkers - Night Of The Vampire

Here is one of my all time fave instrumental cuts, Halloween related or otherwise.

This songs is just plain great, the guitar and organ interplay is just plain wicked and creepy, the reverb overload just adds to the tension. the screams and backward tape masking add an additional creep factor and the overall groove and beat kind of sounds like floorboards creaking... I would imagine the Moontrekkers are English as I've never seen an non British pressing of this 45. This is a Joe Meek production of Telstar fame, who it is told had an obsession with the occult. Other than that i don't know much about the moontrekkers. anyone have any additional info? Was Joe meek a member of the band? Looks like they cut more singles which i certainly have to track down. Apparently this cut was also banned in the UK at the time of its release, who knew the Brits could be so creepy in a Halloween sort of way.

Sam The Sham - Haunted House

Before the Pharaoh's here is Sam The Sham's very 1st single.

Best known for their 1965 smash "Wooly Bully," which helped introduce Tex-Mex rhythms to mainstream rock & roll, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs were formed in Dallas by lead singer Domingo Samudio, who took the name Sam the Sham from a joke about his inability as a vocalist. The Pharaohs consisted of guitarist Ray Stinnet, bassist David Martin, saxophonist Butch Gibson, and drummer Jerry Patterson. Before hitting it big with "Wooly Bully," a song about Samudio's cat, the band recorded the independent single "Haunted House," which helped them get a deal with MGM. Following "Wooly Bully," the group recorded a series of largely novelty singles, but only "Li'l Red Riding Hood" approached the success of its predecessor. Frustrated at being perceived as a talentless novelty act, Samudio broke up the Pharaohs in 1967 and recorded as the Sam the Sham Revue, and adopted the name Sam Domingo in 1970. His lone solo LP, Sam, Hard and Heavy, featured slide guitarist Duane Allman, but failed to establish him as a major talent. Samudio contributed two songs to the 1982 film The Border and later moved to Memphis and became a street preacher. "Wooly Bully," of course, remains a bar band staple. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

The Frankie Stein and the Ghouls records are legendary among Halloween geeks but here's a 45 you don't see all that often... This was released with a picture sleeve back in the day but mine in missing.... :(

"Frankie N. Stein 1st used that pseudonym on the rarest of monster/comedy records- MONSTER RALLY (Starring Hans Conreid & Alice Pearce.) Conreid was best known to TV fans as "Uncle Tanoose" on the old Danny Thomas show: Alice as the Nosey neighbor in the "BEWITCHED" TV series.

But who was Frankie Stein???

The flip to this 45 GOON RIVER was written by Joe Thomas, and WEERDO THE WOLF is credited to Dewey Bergman. So who really was Frankie Stein...???
