Hellfest & Devil Dick Asbury Park 45 Session Live Mix

Hello People! Here is where i will be for the weekend! In France @ Hellfest heavy Music Festival!!! Me and my band Solace will be Playing Sunday morning in the Terrorizer tent!!! And while i play in a Metal band you can see by this music blog my musical taste is pretty wide. One of the styles of muisc that i have really become a big fan of over the years is Funk & Soul. My man DJ Prestige over at Flea Market Funk Blog puts on a great DJ night here in NJ called the Sbury Park 45 Sessions where he and his group of great DJ's spin nothing but the best funk and soul and on nothing but 45's. They are a great bunch of guys and they asked me to participate in the last one and all the live sets were recorded. So if you want to check out what i spun and actually hear the tunes head over to Flea Market Funk and check out the The Asbury Park 45 Sessions Live: Devil Dick Mix
It is presented to you live and raw! Audio glitches included! Make sure you check out the other live mixes already posted by Funky 16 Corners Larry Grogan and DJ Prestige himeself and stay tuned for the rest of the DJ mixes coming soon!!!

I'll see you all when i get back from France!!!

I'm hoping i get to meet Alice Cooper!!!

Junior And The Classics - Birmingham

Ok peeps, tonight is the night! The latest 45 session is at hand. If you are anywhere near Asbury Park head down the The Asbury Lanes Bowling Alley for some Fun, Funk, Soul, Beers & Bowling! Doors are ar 9PM, admission is $5, and it’s 18 to get in, 21 to party with ID.

Here is a 45 that i love. It's a real uptempo stomper with a killer sax break. I put the flip of this, a cover of The Dog by Rufus Thomas on the very 1st Mix DJ Prestige and i did a way way back but this tune smokes just as hard. So if you dig this and are close c'mon on down to the sessions where this just might get spun live!

45 Sessions, Laying Low & Thanks

The devil has been layin' low over here at in the bloggie world. See, i took the last 3 days off from work for My b-day and i've been trying to enjoy myself and trying to stay away from idiot boxes (computer - TV)and now i have a wedding to attend out out of town today so my comp access has been and will be limited but let me steal a few second here this LATE Sat. mourn and get a few words in... 1st thanks to all the kind folks that called or send me b-day wishes, friends & family alike. i love you all. I've really had a great Birthday and I've done TONS of record digging while on this little b-day celebration vacation. the JJB and i have been all over NJ & PA and dig up some nice scores, of all varieties, which i'd like to post up at some point but not today. We also spent a lot of our time eating out and doing a bit of social drinking, as well as long walks on the boardwalk... 2nd, thanks to DJ prestige over at Flea Market Funk for asking me to DJ at last nights 45 sessions. i was planning on attending but DJ Pres didn't ask me till the last minuet to DJ so i figured i'd change it up and did an all old school hip hop & rap set spun EXCLUSIVELY on 45. It was a GREAT night at the Asbury Lanes last night with all the DJ's spinning great stuff but Pres took the cake with his ROCK mix set and right into the funky stuff. Killer. and although he didn't spin it is always a pleasure to catch up w/ dJ Jack The Ripper. We talked punk rock all night! Mutha Records anyone??? The 45 Killer spun some insane African Funk, Larry Grogan always kills it and it was cool to see he finally got that Eddie Holland 45! M-fasis and DJ prime Cuts were all on point and even in the crowd was a bit thin it really was a great night. No fans were injured.
Here is what i spun:

Chase - Open Up Wide - Epic
Kurtis Blow - The Breaks - Mercury
Rob Base & D.J. E-Z Rock - It Takes Two - Profile
J.J. Fad - Supersonic - Ruthless
Beastie Boys - Paul Revere - Def Jam
Rub DMC - Mary Mary - Profile
Ice-T - Colors - Warner Brothers
L.L. Cool j - Going Back to Cali - Def Jam
Biz Markie - Just a Friend - Cold Chillin'
Salt-N-Pepper - Push It - Next Plateau
Newcleus - Jam on It - Sunnyview
Luke featuring 2 Live Crew - Banned in the U.S.A. - Luke Records

Dig it!?!?

Anywho, i hope to be back soon and start getting into the October swing of things with some Spooky and Kooky Halloween oriented 45 cuts!!! as well as a spooktacular collaboration w/ the red boy coming soon as well!!!

Cheers!

Devil Dick - JJB - Planet Mondo Funky Friday & Asbury park 45 Sessions

What an action packed Friday here @ the devil's music!

1st head on over to Planet Mondo where yours truly and my lady friend JJB of Eye Eat Music have both contrbuted a few songs each to Mr. Mondo's "Funky Friday's"...

Each one of us each choosing 3 songs to help get your weekend started!!!

Here is what's going on:

We would both like to thank Planet Mondo for having us do this little guest post over here at his world famous Mondo Atomic Blog!!! This is as it looks a HIS & HERS Collaboration for Your Friday. Please Enjoy

Ladies 1st and she's giving you some Doo-Wop

The Dells – “I want to Go Home”: Boy Group Harmonizers of the 50’s. Doo-Wop Born in a Chicago Burbs High School . Cut released late 1956.

The Eternals –“Rocking in the Jungle”: Bronx Doo-Wop Groups 1st 45’ release originally titled “Christmas in the Jungle” which wasn’t working out so well since the holiday was over 8months away. Careful were you step you may cross a lion in your travels with this tune.

The Coasters – “Sorry Gonna Have to Pass”: Storytelling R&B Vocal Group of the late 50s. They were outside the Box when it came to Mainstream DooWop, many would try to imitating their style in later years. But They Are the Kings of Weaving Vocals around a story

The Devil's part of the show is 3 choice little instrumental nuggets!

Jon Thomas – “Fat Back”: A nice little soulful instrumental R&B Soul number with plenty of Killer organ and sax from 1957. (Early!)

The Craftsmen – “Rock Along”: A kooky little Rockin’ surf type instrumental from -1961: Plenty or crazy organ and twangy guitars a-go-go!!!

The Dartells – “Dartell Stomp”: Another Great Rockin’ Instrumental this time from 1963! More killer organ work, pumping bass and a driving drum beat and break that doesn’t quit!

If these 6 little ditties don’t put a smile on your face this fine Friday then I don’t know what will!!!

Cheers!
dd & jjb

Boby Franklin's Insanity

One B or 2? Either way you slice it.....

Here is a few for my funky fuzzy psych soul lover brothers!!!

Fuck if i could find anything out about Boby and his Insanity, but fuck if i don't love these 45's!!! Any help concerning this man would be highy appreciated as it doesnt look like he made a full lenth album?

There is some FUZZY ass guitar and flute galore and these cuts and anyone that knows anything about me knows i love the fuzz! Damn, i mean even the mellower jazzier cut "Our Theme" breaks bad with a fuzzy guitar solo out of nowhere.....

DO NOT let the trashed looking label throw you off on "Don't Lose" as the label may be trash but the music is pure FUZZ FUNK HEAT!!!!

ok, the last cut does go a little near the disco sound but it's still funky!

So please if anyone is reading this and knows the scoop on Boby PLEASE fill me in!!!

Enjoy the cuts from one of my new fave fuzzy funk artist that i know nothing about!

Boby Franklin's Insanity – Don't Lose What You Got (Trying To Get back What You Had

Boby Franklin's Insanity – Sexplot

Boby Franklin's Insanity – Paradise

Boby Franklin's Insanity – Our Theme

Boby Franklin's Insanity – What Ever's Your Sign (You Got To Be Mine)

Panic Buttons - O-Wow

In honor of my man DJ Prestige of Flea Market Funk fame and his upcoming "Asbury Park 45 Sessions" Jan. 18th and my Philly/Upper Darby gal pal JJB and her Eye Eat Music web blog i bring you some early Philly Funk via "O-Wow" from the "Panic Buttons" on Gamble records. This was released 1st on "Chalom" records which was right in Upper Darby PA. I'm hoping that one day being as i spend a bunch of time in good old U.D. i may come across a first pressing but for now dig the re-issue from Gamble.

Regardless of what label this is on what we have here is a charging little funk diddy from 1968. Banging horns and some sweet & funky guitar playing. This is guaranteed to wake you up this dreary and wet, but warm morning here on the East Coast...

O-Wow!

Broken turntables, playlist, found keys & some news!

OK, so we did the Forward to the Caves radio show last night only after being informed that both turntables were up and running, so I grabbed 2 45 boxes with great anticipation of spinning a bunch of Funky Soul and following it up some some killer Garage & Psych but after only a few tunes realized that the right channel was not working on turntable 2... what a bummer.

The best laid plans of mice & men...

So our game plan was screwed up because we had to fall back on some CD's and change the whole direction of the show and went with a heavier 70's style psych sound. I did manage to get in a plug for DJ Prestige's groovy show he has coming up, here is the info lifted from his site:

The Budos Band will be playing live at the World Famous Asbury Lanes on Friday December 21st. It will be a full band gig (13 members), who will bring their brand of Afro Soul from the streets of Shaolin, (that’s Staten Island) to Asbury Park. DJ Prestige and Larry from Funky 16 Corners will be manning the decks in between sets, spinning Raw and Funky Soul all night. There may be a guest selector or two as well, so you’ll have to drop by the Lanes that night to check it out. The night will be called The 4th and Kingsley Soul Club, and will kick off a series of nights at the Lanes who focus on Funk and Soul bands.

Sounds pretty sweet, so if you in that neck of the woods you should attend & support,
as DJ Pres is seriously kicking this little funk & soul scene in the ass and making some head way! Plus he's a pretty ace dude outside of being an amazing DJ. After watching his set at the last 45 session my dick shriveled up between my legs and my jaw hit the floor. simply killer!

Any way for those paying attention here is last night play list from the radio show.
We hope to get the turntable situation sorted out and we most likely will not be there next Thursday as we will be on our way to London for a one off gig with my band Solace!

Traffic Sounds - Solos
Pieces of Peace - Cease Fire
Boby Franklin's Insanity - Don’t lose what you got
Master of Soul - I Hate You (in the daytime, love you in the nightime)
Iron Knowledge - Show Stopper
Cynics - Turn me Loose

Rainy Day Saints - She's Fallen Apart
Fresh Blueberry Pancake - Hassels
The Mainlines - Bring on the Sweet Life

Morgen - She's the Nitetime
Stark Naked - All of them Witches
Uriah Heep - Tears in my Eyes
ShutDown 66 - ShutDown 66

The Stooges - TV Eye
The Butthole Surfers - Movin to Florida

Asbury Park 45 Session Play List, Tech problems, good times & lost keys...

whoa!

My head is still spinning a bit from last nights jam session as i sip some luke warm coffee and try to put the events that took place into some form of order.

Man, it was a whole lotta fun and there was some serious music spun. I can't wait to see play lists from everyone so I can start finding some of the wicked shit that was played!

Yours truly got off to a shaky start due some technical problems and in some part i'm sure my utter stupidity but alas all was rectified and the fuzz & funk was put forth!

i also lost my keys last night which didn't make for a fun time trying to get in the house at 3AM without them so if anyone finds a set of keys PLEASE let me know!

I'm still a bit out of it considering MANY Guinness were drank last night and i very rarely see 3AM anymore being a working man and all so I'm not going to get too detailed since details are a bit "fuzzy" but everyone killed it and i had a wicked good time!

so right to the point, here is what the devil dick played:

Sir Joe and Free Soul - (I've Got) So Much Trouble In My Mind - Mantis
Bob Franklin's Insanity - Don't Lose What You Got (Trying To Get Back What You Had) - Westbound
The Moods - King Hustler - Red Dog
Fantastic Epics - Fun and Funk Part III - Tories
Third Guitar - Down To The River - Rojac
The Wild Magnolias - Smoke My Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right) - Polydor
Ike & Tina Turner & The Ikettes - Contact High - Liberty
Sound Experience - 40 Acres and A Mule - Soulville
Iron Knowledge - Show Stopper - Tammy
Masters Of Soul - I Hate You (In The Daytime And Love You At Night)- Duke
Bags - It's Heavy - GSF

Many thanks to DJ Prestige for putting this thing on and having the old man back. If you aint getting your ass down here for this shit you is missing out BIG!

Cheers!
