FUNK 45
SOUL INVADERS INC - Careless loving / So good
on YORKTOWN
so I'm at the flea market yesterday and it was pretty dead but i stumble upon a box of 45's and there is NOTHING in the box, i mean some beat up late 60's early 70's pop like the carpenters and osmonds and just in the worst shape. Towards the end of the box i pull out this interesting looking 45. It's the Soul Invaders Inc on Yorktown. I don't know anythingabout this record but it has "the look".
Great name.
Cool label I've never seen before.
So......
I pull it out and ask "how much"
dude says, "I'm selling the whole box for 10 bucks"
i say, "well there isn't much else i could use in there i'll give you 2 bucks for the 45"
dude says as he snatches the 45 from my hand "i'm selling the whole box for 10 bucks"
whoa killer, ease up....
I make a call to my bud DJ Pres and ask him if he knows anything about the 45.
he says he doesn't but says go for it and buy the whole box.
So I go back and say ok man i'll take the box for 10 bucks it's kinda slow out here, yada, yada, yada....
dude says "you can have the box for 10 without that 45, i'm gonna hold onto that one"
I mean what the hell? The flea market set is starting to really get under my skin.
It was obvious he was using the fact that i wanted this and only this 45 to look it up and see what it was worth.
So i get home and i look it up online and of course its a psych soul peice out of NYC and fairly rare. The kind of shit that is right up my alley.
I'm wicked bummed. I know i shoulda just took the chance the 1st time and bought the box but I'm trying to be more thrifty and ease up on my wallet these days so...
That there is the story of the one that got away.
if anyone has a copy that would like to send my way, i'm up for a trade or purchase as it just eats away at me now knowing that i had it in my hands and lost it!

so many got away from me from stinky steve....this white label soul record that i'll never find again!
Guys,
I am the saxophonist on the record. I havent seen my friends for years... but it was a turn on for a young 15 year old to have an experience like that one. thanks for the memories. I recently found one of those records on Ebay: my wife didnt believe me. Now she does...
Thanks !!

yo cwsr,
thats wild!
This is the second time i've had someone contact me about a record that i had or almost had.
Once I had one of the guys from "the soul stoppers" contact me after i sold one on ebay for a friend.
Where was it cut?
Who were the other guys in the band?
Did any of you go one to other projects.
Hope you reply!
Cheers!
Thanks for the reply,
Me (15 years old at the time -- tenor sax), Reggie (trumpet), Hank (also sax), Donnie Ambrose (Gibson Guitar), Steve (Base), Steve (drums), Mike Simmons (lead vocals). We all broke and went to college, married, or school. Donnie went on to studio work with a lot of cats (Eddie Kendricks, back up for Chaka Khan on the road ... I think). Donnie was a stud on guitar and my best bud in the band. I went on to college. I am presently Commander of Air Force Comm Agency, Scott AFB, Ill. Check me out on our website.
It was a great time in my life -- those experiences and the travel ... exposed me to "success". I havent looked back since. By the way, the tune was cut in Brooklyn, New York.
Talk to ya soon...

CWsr,
That's awesome thanks for the info!
Got any old pics from back in the day? I'd love to check 'em out.
Any crazy/wild stories from your travels?
Congrats on all your success!
I tried to look you up via the web but no luck, you didn't leave a link!
Got lots of pics... old days.. huge Afro: cant believe I looked like that. Crazy Stories -- How about me, back in the day, playing at a club called "The Cheetah" in New York City ... I'm playing along and the old sax I had falls apart in my hands : right in the middle of a lick. No kidding. Entire Band goes nuts laughing. I just keep trying to play ... then start playing the congo drums ...it was FUNNY!
Any way, Goog;le in Air Force Communications Agency and hit on Commander. Thats is me ...

Tommy
T,
I'll look around for some old Soul Invader stuff... maybe we'll get a "thing" goin and folks will make this a cult classic!
Those days felt like yesterday ... but it went by like a bolt!
As far as me looking straight ... 28 years in the military will do that to you. Soon to move on from that also... its time to retire and get on with my next life. Looking forward to it ... a new challenge.
