Starlog Presents Galactic Sound Effects

Do you need some cheesy "galactic" sound effects from 1979? Of course not, but here they are anyway... Included as an "SFX" bonus in an issue of STARLOG magazine.

I'm sure in '79 a lot of 10 year old boys thought this was the shit but yeah, now it's pretty tame sounding by today's standards....

"Ken Walker, author of this installment of Special Effects and contributor to CINEMAGIC magazine, is well-known for his fantasy film music utilizing electronic synthesizers. The GALACTIC SOUND EFFECTS were created by Ken on his own custom-built machine, and vividly convey the sounds of tomorrow. An electronics designer with a long musical background, Ken presides over his own sound-effects company and is STARLOG's Special Project Director.

Jim Thompson, whose surrealistic painting "Reflections in Pisces" graces the front side of this recording, combines professional artistry with a love for the fantastic, and has had his work featured in both FUTURE LIFE and STARLOG. A philosopher at heart, Jim numbers, among his many interests, photography, astronomy and science-fiction - and his paintings perfectly illustrate an intelligent approach to the depiction of far-away worlds.

Cool and weird little picture disk flexi here. I don't know anything about Asia (is that even the politically correct thing to say? It was still the Orient when i went to school...) and its languages, so i can't be sure but i THINK this is Chinese? But i could very easily be wrong.... I can't even tell what speed this is suppossed to be at. I copied it 45 rpms and at 33. At 45 the music sounds more "correct" but the voice is so fast i couldn't be sure. At 33 it sounds a lot more creepy, kinda like a very weird old cartoon soundtrack and the voice sounds ok but i can't be sure since i do not speak Chinese.... Either way, i like the way this sounds...

Many moons ago, about 5 or 6 lifetimes ago i used to date a little lady who loved this here band R.E.M. - Me, not so much but Syd Barrett on the other hand is a whole other story. Anyway, this little lady also read little lady magazines and this here little flexi-disk came out of one called "Sassy"... yeah i own a record that came out of Sassy magazine so what... Im sure at the time Sassy must have sold a billion copies of the mag because of this selling point, i guess REM were huge back then but who knows how many of these little plastic flexi's exist now? I wonder how long these things will last? This one is starting to sound a bit fuzzy and almost makes it sound like an old 78... anyway, there is no need to say anything about R.E.M. - personnaly i don't care much about them and what can the little old devil add about the the madcap himself Syd? Just check this odd cover of Syd's Dark Globe as done by Mikey Stipe....
